Sea Song Lyrics

Drive with me
Do the things you won't believe
Drive with me
Past the city and down to sea
Crushing dreams
Leave me be
I cannot sleep

Drive with me
Past the city and down to sea
Crushing dreams
Leave in peace
Let me be

Oh, it's ingrained
It's ingrained in me
Oh, I soothe my pain
It's ingrained in me

Drive with me
Drive with me

nobody has commented on this? weeeiird...to me, it's one of the standout tracks on 'lost souls'. anyway, I always thought that he was saying 'drown with me' which gave the song a much more depressed/suicidal vibe. it could still be about suicide or something, though. maybe he's gonna drive his car into the sea. but then why would he ask somebody to 'drive with' him? so maybe he's just goin' down to the beach with a friend to talk. but the 'do the things you won't believe' line still bugs me...what won't he/she believe? maybe he is gonna off himself, just not by driving his car into the water... on another note, I was walking to school one day a few years ago listening to this song and it was winter and there was snow everywhere and it was windy and I passed a house that had a little wind vane in the yard and it was turning slowly and I stared at it for a bit...it seemed appropriate.

Trying to decipher the barely audible samples:

2:16 "he used to talk to me all the time... sometimes it (???)

3:55 no idea... but the person speaking sounds on the verge of tears, and it sounds heartbreaking.

4:04 "I just gave up... I just gave up."

No reason really for trying to decipher these samples, just for fun. They really intrigue me, though... They add so much more to the song, somehow. It's like they are a part of the story that the song is telling.

I love that this song is like the definition of an atmospheric song; it's very reminiscient of the sea. And it does seem to tell a story, one that's told simply through the notes and the atmosphere of the song and not through words. I love it so much.

I also like to think of the samples as like a fuzzy flashback in a movie or something. Sort of like when a character sees something that sparks an image in their mind that flashes onscreen for like 2 seconds... It's very unclear but appears to have a lot of meaning. That's how it seems to me with this song, sometimes.

The sample is from the film Paris,Texas. It's taken from a monologue at the end of the film.

The words from the samples are:

"I used to talk to you all the time."

"Sometimes your voice would wake me up."

"It would wake me up in the middle of the night, just like you were in the room with me."

"I hear your voice all the time"

"I just gave up... I just gave up"

You can see more of the dialog on the quotes page for the film...

I think this song is about reaching rock bottom, and wanting to bring someone else down with you. Perhaps "drive with me" is a metaphor for doing the things that one does when they hit rock bottom. "It's ingrained in me" - something that you have to do in order to cope. I love this song...... it accepts the fact that sometimes when things are bad, you've got to do whatever you can to deal... even if those things are negative.

Every time I hear this song, it triggers some sort of strange emotion- I'm not sure how to describe it. I just feel at peace, sad, content, and reflective all at the same time. I have a story sort of like a few comments above me but somewhat different...

-My family and I were coming back from a trip and we stopped at a rest stop where there is this huge look out into a valley and there are these beautiful mountains towering above you (I believe it is called Sunset Point it's in Arizona) Anyway, my dad was fiddling with the car or something and my mom was letting our dog walk around for a few minutes so I went and sat on a concrete bench next to some old people and looked out at the sunset. It was laden with blazing red, pink and a fading orange...I think about it every time I hear this song.

Agreed Willow to all those emotions you listed for this song. I think for me, melancholy comes closest maybe, but in a good way.

Anyway your little story made me join this site to comment. To me some of my favourite tracks of all time take me back to when I first heard them and to whatever was happening around me at the time. More often than not it won't seem like a significant moment, but somehow the song makes it one and the memory stays with me forever.

It's truly amazing, what music can do.

I always hear "drive with me" at first, then later, when they've reached their destination, "drown with me". I freaking LOVE all of the ghostly and haunting elements Doves put into their music. I always imagine the samples in this tune to be representative of EVPs. (recorded ghost and spirit voices)

On a funnier note, the subject matter I imagine when I listen to this one reminds me of an alternate version of the "Something to Tide You Over" story in Creepshow. (except willingly and not forced)
