My Beloved Monster Lyrics
We go everywhere together
Wearing a raincoat that has four sleeves
Gets us through all kinds of weather
That comes between me and the awful sting
That comes from living in a world that's so damn mean
If she wants she will disrobe you
But if you lay her down for a kiss
Her little heart it could explode
That comes between me and the awful sting
That comes from living in a world that's so damn mean
La la la la la la

Why the fuck would a dog disrobe him and lay him down for a kiss? Then, making her heart explode. That's kinda...beastly. o.O
I think it's about a guy that's in love with a girl who's really agressive, but underneath it all, she's really sweet, tender, and innocent.
She makes his life worth while.
I can relate. [:

my interpretation is more along the lines of benjay's. this is a very sad song and while i think depression plays into it, the actual monster itself is heroin use/addiction, as E has admitted to using it before and would explain the line-
She will always be the only thing That comes between me and the awful sting That comes from living in a world that's so damn mean
It wouldn't make sense that depression helps him make it through, but drugs would be a strong possibility.

I'm suprised that everyone on here seems to think that this song is about a dog. Despite being such a happy tune, I have always believed this song to describe something really sad. I think this song was written about E's sister, who suffered from schizophrenia and depression. She started to accept her illness and live happily for while, but then her "beloved monster" destoryed her, ultimately motivating her to commit suicide.

To me this song has always been about an inner self, a feeling that inside of me is some kind of monster who others would not understand, but who is part of me and whom I myself still like, I dont want to loose this part of me even though its kind of monster. I think "raincoat that has four sleeves" is the line which most supports my version. You wouldnt be in the same raincoat with your girlfriend. It's only you in that raincoat. My interpretation is basically the same as "Gandalf the Pink's", who is just saying that the inner monster, the song is written about, was E's sister's. Could be.

I like Caleb Carr's reference best, in his finalbook, "My Beloved Monster: Masha, the Half Wild Rescue Cat Who Rescued Me. Says it all. Schlaf shoën, Caleb.
[Edit: For the record]

Theres also my mad beloved monster party a more funky version

On the shrek soundtrack, I'd go with Stoogie's opinion. (Though, I don't quite understand what he was trying to say in the last line, "... what matters is what you lie them." ¿Qué?)
Eels-fellow (Whatever his name is) was majorly screwd in life. To me, Beloved Monster sounds a little more bitter.
I can't support it with the lyrics, but that's my interpretation.

I love this song and to me it means that his girlfriend may be different, maybe she is totally opposite from him, but he loves for that and loves just being with her.

My beloved monster is tough If she wants she will disrobe you But if you lay her down for a kiss Her little heart it could explode
To me it's about a woman that wants companionship and she goes about finding it the wrong way. She's a little monster for that. She is tough, because she was born that way, she will disrobe you, she learned to treat men like men treated her. But underneath it all, she is still a good-natured person, and is hurting herself with acting like a man, when she is a woman.
I adore the la,la,la,la chorus, you know that means I love you...

this song is, for lack of a more fitting word, "cute". He loves someone so much, someone that is beautiful to him although she is hated or feared by others... and he's so affectionate in the lyrcis and tone, I like this :)
