I really love you and I mean you
The star above you, crystal blue
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you

I wouldn't see you and I love to
I fly above you, yes I do
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you

Floating, bumping, noses dodge a tooth
The fins a luminous
Fangs all 'round the clown
Is dark below the boulders hiding all
The sunlight's good for us
'Cause we're the fishes and all we do
The move about is all we do
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you

Floating, bumping, noses dodge a tooth
The fins a luminous
Fangs all 'round the clown
Is dark below the boulders hiding all
The sunlight's good for us
'Cause we're the fishes and all we do
The move about is all we do
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you

I really love you and I mean you
The star above you, crystal blue
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you

My father used to sing this to me when I was a baby. I cannot explain my feelings towards it, it's simply magical.

catroar: your father must be brilliant (and reading this, it's as if I can hear how tenderly he sang to you). come to think of it, terrapin has something of the feel of a lullaby...which never struck me before, but it should have. it is wonderfully unhurried (as gangastar suggests)

syd's creative process seems almost as if it sprung from what might (uncharitably) be called an inability to keep one's mind on the point. he starts off simply struggling to put into words how much he loves her: "my hair's on end about you," which is lovely. then he goes off on a tangent about fish, and it's perfect...as if he planned it that way. maybe he did; somehow I doubt it.

Amazing song. terrapin comes up in the dictionary as "any of various aquatic turtles", which relates i guess to the slow tempo of the song. I always understood it as go slow and enjoy life, since everything we do is meaningless in the end. Find someone to love and enjoy while it lasts, no?
