Golden Hair Lyrics

Lean out your window, golden hair
I heard you singing in the midnight air
my book is closed, I read no more
watching the fire dance, on the floor
I've left my book,
I've left my room

For I heard you singing through the gloom
singing and singing, a merry air
lean out the window, golden hair...

This song is actually a James Joyce poem. Barret wrote the music for it when he was only 16.

I think the theme of the song is love, as are most songs on "the madcap laughs".

Yes. Love conquers everything, even life.

I think he's describing being alone and then falling for a woman, and at that point that all you want is to be with that woman. By closing his book and leaving his room, he is setting out to be with her.

This song is just beautiful, the whole album is a masterpiece in my eyes (and ears) the song meaning is probably about a woman who had his attention or love as he put down the book. The character with golden hair reminded me of rumpelstiltskin as sang in a quite old folky way. I never realised it was a James Joyce poem though even though i have read Dubliners i know not much more of Joyce.
