So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Diamonds are forever, they are all I need to please me
They can stimulate and tease me
They won't leave in the night
I've no fear that they might desert me
Diamonds are forever, hold one up and then caress it
Touch it, stroke it and undress it
I can see ev'ry part, nothing hides in the heart to hurt me
I don't need love, for what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me
For when love's gone, they'll lustre on
Diamonds are forever, sparkling round my little finger
Unlike men, the diamonds linger
Men are mere mortals who are not worth going to your grave for
I don't need love, for what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me
For when love's gone, they'll lustre on
Diamonds are forever, forever, forever
They can stimulate and tease me
They won't leave in the night
I've no fear that they might desert me
Diamonds are forever, hold one up and then caress it
Touch it, stroke it and undress it
I can see ev'ry part, nothing hides in the heart to hurt me
I don't need love, for what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me
For when love's gone, they'll lustre on
Diamonds are forever, sparkling round my little finger
Unlike men, the diamonds linger
Men are mere mortals who are not worth going to your grave for
I don't need love, for what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me
For when love's gone, they'll lustre on
Diamonds are forever, forever, forever

This is the best song in the whole world! When you're feeling down in the dumps, sick of constantly meeting horrible men that treat you so bad, there's nothing like putting shirley on and singing your heart out! Diamonds are much better than men!
This is a 007 song, y'know.
ya I hate James Bond and I heard it on a music video by David Arnold i think....anyway, I like her version of it too! It's great!
...
lmao she wrote the damn song. It's the original, shirley is, the original.
007...it wasnt made for that movie, haha my god people..
she did NOT write it, John Barry and Donald Black did and it WAS made for that movie.... but this is the quintessential JB Theme... and Shirley ROCKS it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^^yeah, Alex Turner showed her up ;)
On one of my James Bond special features it has an interview with I think John Barry and he said he told Shirley to sing the song like it was about a penis .. instead of diamonds.
You can kind of see the connection in the lyrics:
"They are all I need to please me, They can stimulate and tease me,"
"Hold one up and then caress it, Touch it, stroke it and undress it, I can see every part,"
.. and yes, Shirley didn't write it, it was made for the movie (along with Goldfinger, John Barry was the best Bond composer)
i love the song and the film :)
I LOVE THE ARCTIC MONKEYS VERSION
