The first time i heard this, i was certain someone had been reading my journal....then i realized i don't keep a journal!
TO ME, it's a story about taking a chance that turns out to be more than expected....you'll notice he doesn't seem to REGRET the experience?
I always loved this song and bamd. Never was quite sure what it meant though.
What I recall is that the Restless Heart's music video of this song led you to believe that Dancy had killed (in a fit of rage) the girl from New Orleans.
The song is about my mother! She was engaged to a a man that worked off shore. He would beat her every time he came home. "Dancy" which was not his real name was about 10 years older than her and witness her fiance almost kill her by choking her outside on the balcony. Dancy began coming by and checking on her several times a week! Their relationship grew romantically and one day her fiance came in and caught them. He began beating her, kicking her. A fight broke out between the two men! Dancy killed him! My mother told him to run. leave and never come back.... She was pregnant by Dancy with me and they didn't know it yet! This was in 1962 and there was no internet! She could never find him, to this day I do not know who my father is or his real name. My mother took the blame for her fiance's death and was not charged because so many people knew how he treated her! Now you know the story!
This song is about a pimp (the man with the knife) and the devil dressed in black or the demon (the beautiful girll) setting up a man who is just in town working (Dancy). The pimp persuades Dancy to use his services while in town (having sex with the girl), but the pimp and the girl have other intentions since Dancy is a man known to be wealthy. They have a plan to rob Dancy, but that plan backfires as Dancy kills the pimp and runs away. All of this happens in New Orleans. Dancy grows old and is a very good man who is a deacon of his church, but lives with memories and nightmares of this horrible day many years ago! It never leaves his mind or his spirit! Absolutely unbelievable song that made it to #1 on the charts! Restless Heart is the greatest vocal band in the history of country music and resemble the Eagles with their harmonies.
