Oh, Oh Deep water
Black, and cold like the night
I stand with arms wide open
I've run a twisted mile
I'm a stranger
In the eyes of the maker

I could not see
For fog in my eyes
I could not feel
For the fear in my life
From across the great divide
In the distance I saw a light
Jean Baptiste
Walking to me with the maker

My body is bent and broken
By long and dangerous sleep
I can work the fields of Abraham
And turn my head away
I'm not a stranger
In the eyes of the maker

Brother john
Have you seen the homeless daughters
Standing there
With broken dreams
I have seen the flaming swords

There over east of eden
Burning in the eyes of the maker
Burning in the eyes of the maker
Burning in the eyes of the maker
Burning in the eyes of the maker

Oh river rise from your sleep....

This song has very obvious Christian overtones woven throughout, I know this is not a DMB original, but Dave actually has a lot of Christian references in his music. Now the only thing is if you are a Christian and/or choose to follow along with the thoughts, and obviously nobody really knows the meaning, save the writer.

I like what barnsinister and Idanielsen have to say. Here are some other thoughts: Verse 1: The water could be the 4 rivers that converge in Eden, Adam screws up (runs a twisted line) and is now ashamed to be seen by God. So, he finally comes out to confront his mistake and God is angry, curses the ground and banishes Adam/Eve from the garden of course they are going to be afraid, scared and confused regarding the uncertainty of their future.

Verse 2: Could go in a multitude of directions with this one. "Across the great divide, in the distance I saw light" could be referencing the great chasm between the earthly and spiritual realm. John the Baptist was Jesus' brother, there are some small and ancient philosophies that believe John was actually the Messiah. "Body was bent and broken, from a long and dangerous sleep" could be referencing Adam/Eve here again, Genesis 2:21-23, and perhaps the lineage of John-Abraham-Shem-Noah-Adam. It could also be talking about our spiritual sleep when we are not in the presence of God here on earth, and what a toll that can take on us. I have heard reference of "working the fields of Abraham" with regards to reaching out to the lost, as abraham is considered the father of the nations. And the realization that if you believe we are made in God's image then we cannot be strangers in God's eyes, no matter what our sins are.

Verse 3: "...homeless daughters, standing there with broken wings..." could be a reference to "fallen angels" or sinners, just like adam/eve. In a Christian system of faith we are all sinners and will be judged for our own sins not for adam and eve's transgressions. The end of this verse is very biblical indeed, Genesis 3:23-24 "So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life." God was indeed angry.

Verse 4: could be referencing the resurrection.

Just some thoughts, your journey is your own make it worth the ride. Dave made a good pick singing this brilliant song. peace Wolf.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
