The Finer Things Lyrics

While there is time
Let's go out and feel everything
If you hold me
I will let you into my dream
For time is a river rolling into nowhere
We must live while we can
And we'll drink our cup of laughter

The finer things keep shining through
The way my soul gets lost in you
The finer things I feel in me
The golden dance life could be

Oh, I've been sad
And have walked bitter streets alone
And come morning
There's a good wind to blow me home
So time is a river rolling into nowhere
I will live while I can
I will have my ever after

The finer things keep shining through
The way my soul gets lost in you
The finer things I feel in me
The golden dance life could be

We go so fast, why don't we make it last
Life is glowing inside you and me
Please take my hand, here where I stand
Won't you come out and dance with me
Come see, with me, come see

And lovers try
'Til they get the best of the night
And come morning
They are tangled up in the light
So time be a river rolling into nowhere
They love while they can
And they think about the night so sweet

The finer things keep shining through
The way my soul gets lost in you
The finer things I feel in me
The golden dance life could be

I love the line "while there is time, let's go out and do everything". It's a reminder that life is short and we have to live while we can, which he points out.

This song is just saying that life is short and he is telling the girl that they should focus on the good things in life and try to live life to the fullest.

Couldn't agree more!

This man has found the woman who is soul's mate. She sounds hesitant that such a thing can exist. He is pouring his heart out to convince her the time is now to let their love grow. It's not just sex for him. He wants her to feel the magic of her soul as he feels it in his.

My Opinion

As with the other songs written or co-written by Will Jennings, this also has a spiritual meaning. I used to think this was about appreciating the simpler things in life, like laughter or being with the person you love. But now I think it's about enjoying material ("finer things") and spiritual ("the way my soul gets lost in you") possessions. He's kinda obsessed with extending the "fast" life (see also "Back in the High Life Again"). We know this song is about the dark side ("and lovers try til they get the best of the night..."). Even in the morning light, they're still thinking of (worshiping) the night. The "lovers" are the person and the devil dancing/mating together.

My Interpretation

Excellent, Jazzzyone.

When I was a kid, I felt the meaning of the song to be inspirational and urging, but now I see it is not the case. It is cleary an eff-it-all, lets go out and experience pleasures while we can, whenever we can, however we can.

It is about a guy trying to freak out a girl by telling her that she is going to die maybe today maybe tomorrow so while there is time lets f**k every way possible.

It is a get into her pants song..

@absent124 I hope you don't miss your soul's mate coming into your life with thoughts like that. smh
