I'm not sure this is a love song at all. I think it's the opposite, about not being able to be in a relationship. A few WB songs touch on mental illness and abusive relationships - it sounds like the breakdown of a relationship and being alone with yourself. The cover even has him holding a cutout of his own face - he doesn't need anybody else apart from himself?
a twisted love song, lyrics describe wife beating. my favourite line is 'they built portholes for bono to gaze out on the bay and sing about mountains'. haha, brilliant. whipping boy are a real irish rock band, i've never heard anything combine outside influences with a celtic tinge in music and lyric

aye, i'd say that it's a twisted love song too, the guy is probably just thinking to himself all the time and isn't opening up to his woman. he's constantly insular and thinking about other issues than love, even though he really really loves her. he feels that when he's comfortable in love, he is lazy and 'dim' and is frustrated he can't balance the other aspects of his life and thought with his love life, like when she won't let him go to the phone. and then he hits hit her and feels terrible because he can't believe that he would do that. the chorus might be like an apology or a plea or something. anyway, fantastic emotional song.
I gasp every time hear him say 'I hit you for the first time today' - most honest, painfully-shocking without trying to be song ever. beautiful
