The Fuse Lyrics
Down at the court house they're ringin' the flag down
Long black line of cars snakin' slow through town
Red sheets snappin' on the line
With this ring will you be mine
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)
Trees on fire with the first fall's frost
Long black line in front of Holy Cross
Blood moon risin' in a sky of black dust
Tell me baby who do you trust?
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)
Tires on the highway hissin' something's coming
You can feel the wires in the tree tops hummin'
Devil's on the horizon line
Your kiss and I'm alive
A quiet afternoon, an empty house
On the edge of your bed you slip off your blouse
The room is burning with the noon sun
Your bittersweet taste on my tongue
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)
Long black line of cars snakin' slow through town
Red sheets snappin' on the line
With this ring will you be mine
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)
Long black line in front of Holy Cross
Blood moon risin' in a sky of black dust
Tell me baby who do you trust?
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)
You can feel the wires in the tree tops hummin'
Devil's on the horizon line
Your kiss and I'm alive
On the edge of your bed you slip off your blouse
The room is burning with the noon sun
Your bittersweet taste on my tongue
The fuse is burning
(Shut out the lights)
The fuse is burning
(Come on let me do you right)

This is Springsteen's most sexually explicit song on any of his albums, lyrically and musically.
The live performance is astonishing -- it is a viciously difficult piece for drums especially (the album version uses a drum machine) and showcases Max Weinberg as one of the great rock drummers.
Explicit, really? I'd say 'Leap Of Faith' is much more so.

I think this song is actually about the first night a couple has met up again after the effects of 9/11. After one of them were on the 'missing' list
Surely it's about a funeral and a couple making love afterwards. Powerful words and music propels their emotions towards us.
Love the drums!
I agree about the death, definitely a ghost in the house.
With death comes serious emotion that is hard to match. Humans are generally extremely aroused during bouts of intense emotion. I think this song is about a spouse dealing with the battle of losing their partner, however they are struggling with a never ending desire to lay with their partner. The song is about the guilt that they feel for not being able to mourn and simply being overcome with arousal. The last part of the song is that person giving into their desire and pleasuring themselves.
I think the wife is the death because he says your bitter sweet taste on my tongue.
I think you all are overthinking it. I'd like to hear from Bruce himself what his thoughts were. I think it's life in general after 9/11, everything was so tragic and painful, yet the world kept turning. People continued to do what we've always done, but with this looming sadness that covered us like a deep fog.
Keeping in mind that the album was written as a response to the events of September 11th, this song has always presented a chilling image for me. Even without the lyrics, It always makes me think of the ghost of a dead husand returning to his bedroom and making love to his wife one last time.
Actually reading over the lyrics, I believe the first poster had the right idea. But what I think is the wife is alone one day and she is pleasing herself thinking of her deceased husband and imagining he was there. Or perhaps even he comes to her in a dream?
