Worlds Apart Lyrics

I hold you in my arms, that's when it starts
I seek faith in your kiss, and comfort in your heart
I taste the seed upon your lips, lay my tongue upon your scars
But when I look into your eyes, we stand worlds apart

Where the distant oceans sing, and rise to the plain
In this dry and troubled country, your beauty remains
Down from the mountain roads where the highway rolls to dark
'Neath Allah's blessed rain, we remain worlds apart

Sometimes the truth just ain't enough
Or it's too much in times like this
Let's throw the truth away, we'll find it in this kiss
In your skin upon my skin, in the beating of our hearts
May the living let us in, before the dead tear us apart

We'll let blood build a bridge, over mountains draped in stars
I'll meet you on the ridge, between these worlds apart
We've got this moment now to live, then it's all just dust and dark
Let love give what it gives
Let's let love give what it gives

i love the fusion between western and eastern music in this. It all means adventure to me, both with the lyrics and how the music seems so full, with so many intertwining melodies.

best song off the rising, hands down. i think its about letting love be the ultimate building foundation and working from there.

Just listen to the version of this song made by folk singer from Majorca (Balearic Islands) Maria del Mar Bonet, which is sung in Catalan. I´m a huge fan of the Boss, but you just have to listen to this song it´s SUPERB. So much better that Bruce´s. The thing is that only someone born in the Mediterranean Sea can sing this song with its full meaning. The instruments that accompany her are Eastern. There are no words to describe this version. I just wish they would both sing it when the Boss comes to Barcelona. That would be AMAZING.

Its good and I'm pleased to add it to my library so thanks for the suggestion. But it lacks the power of Springsteens version. And a powerful song deserves a powerful delivery. Not that I'm obsesses with power or anything! :) thanks susie.

@susie@inicia.es missing the rock side which represents US / West

this song is amazing, i love the imagery and the music is incredible too. my favorite line is "may the living let us in before the dead tear us apart." i think bruce is saying that we need to accept people for who they are now, and not judge them based on what their ancestors did or stereotypes.

Its about the instant condemnation and stereotyping of Muslims being terrorists caused by 9/11. The whole album holds the event as a theme, and I think this song is incredible, not only in sound, but in the way he dared to empathize with a Muslim at a time when there were such strong anti-Islamic sentiments.

In particular, I think its about an Asian Muslim in love with a westerner, "May the living let us in, before the dead tear us apart" is begging for them to be accepted as a couple and not let the terrible acts of a few Muslims be used to destroy their love. The "worlds apart" are those of the Asian and the American, each with different customs and ways of life, yet these two find love and unity despite these differences and, in particular, the tension in the time immediately following 9/11.

Overall I think its saying to celebrate the love some people can find despite these differences, rather than condemn the minority of extremists who cause such destruction.

Well done Stinky! I agree. And a great tune too.

although the lyrics contradict what im bout to say .. i think it means usa's need to do more about african countries and poverty. I think the usa should get those nations started economically.

This song is about coming together. Whether its coming together to end poverty in Africa, millions of kids who have never seen electricity, or simply coming together in a relationship to make it work. Thats why he gave the song a Eastern tinge to the song.

My favorite line is 'In your skin upon my skin, and the beating of our hearts'.

Their skins are obviously different colors but hearts know no race. What we have in common is so much greater than what separates us.

So tender, so sensual!
