Flood II Lyrics

And her hallway Moves
Like the ocean Moves
And her hallway Moves
Like the sea
Like the sea

She says no no no no harm will come your way
She says bring it on down, bring on the wave
She says: nobody done no harm
Grace of God and raise your arms
She says: face it and it's a place to stay

This, this is the way it was
This, this is the way it is
When the water come rushing, rushing in

CHORUS
She says
She says anytime
Raise your arms
Flood

And her hallway
Like...
Like...

Like a million voices call my name
Like a million voices calling
Not now, not never again...
Sitting here now in this bar for hours
Strange men rent strange flowers
Seconds to the drop but it feels like hours and I
Think I'm going to...going to...

This, this is the way it was
This, this is the way it is
When the water come rushing, rushing in

CHORUS

And her hallway...

CHORUS

"[Flood II]'s certainly more focused. 'I' is 'Are you sure we really want to do this?,' and 'II' is 'Yeah, here we go!' In normal circumstances, the raising of arms is a sign of exultation but, if you're surrounded by water, it's complete submission, 'Down we go'. This is both at once." - Eldritch, [ATF]

"Bring on the wave".

As discussed above, in a nuclear attack, Hamburg could be obliterated by a tidal wave. Here Eldritch is comparing this form of obliteration with the 'little death' of orgasm.

"Raise your arms"

"It's hard to hold the hand of anyone who is reaching for the sky just to surrender" -The Stranger Song, Leonard Cohen (from the LP The Songs of Leonard Cohen ). If you raise your arms in water then you sink. The connection with Cohen's image of raising arms to surrender seems particularly apt. In fact passages of The Stranger Song are reminiscent of many of the Sisters more melancholy songs, particularly Nine While Nine .

Brilliant song from a brilliant album. Clearly their high point and probably one of the best albums of the 80s. Andrew Eldritch doesn't like being called "goth", but Floodland is the epitome of what a goth album should sound like. Full of dark moodiness, lush synth sounds, and irresistable dance beats. I'm guessing if you read these lyrics then you probably have the album already...if not...GET IT.

Agreed, it's a great album, although it's great regardless of how "goth" it is (or isn't).

As for the song itself, it's about BANGIN' BROADS!

Depends if you think Goth is that jangily rubbish that Hussey was always involved in. I've never seen this as Goth, it's Dark yes, but that doesn't make it goth. Their first album, the Hussey tainted "First And Last And Boring" was Goth. This is Synth Pop buried for a few years and then dredged up, kicked about and then covered in sackcloth. Vision Thing was even less Goth.

@xdvr Everybody still hates you forever. From 17 years in your future. Oh and also you're completely wrong about everything.
