I was once sittin' on top of the world
I really had things in my hands
But something went wrong I'm not sure what
And now I'm sittin' here at home alone
People - They want to give you free advice
And that's something that I've always tried
But you get what you pay for that's what I say
And now I'm payin' and payin' and payin'
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
Everything I wanted cooking on the stove
Everything I needed right in the home
I had the best thing you can have
You can have it, you can have it now
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
Wiped that smile off my face
Put me down in my proper place
But the world just keeps on spinning around
And I'm still hanging around this world
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
I really had things in my hands
But something went wrong I'm not sure what
And now I'm sittin' here at home alone
And that's something that I've always tried
But you get what you pay for that's what I say
And now I'm payin' and payin' and payin'
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
Everything I needed right in the home
I had the best thing you can have
You can have it, you can have it now
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch
Put me down in my proper place
But the world just keeps on spinning around
And I'm still hanging around this world
I'm startin' over from scratch
I lost everything I had
I'm startin' over from scratch

--You can have it, you can have it now what does he mean by that
does he mean that since he's lost it [all] it's free for someone else to take?
i find the rest of the song pretty self-explanatory. it's comforting when you feel completely setback to hear succesful people and those you admire remind you that they have endured drastic failures too.
This song always makes me think of my dad after my folks got divorced when I was 15. He frequently talked about just what is said in this song, just his whole life taken away all at once, all his happiness (whatever happiness there was by the time they finally divorced), his home, all his possessions. He had to buy a new tv, for god's sake. Straight back to square one, right where he was when he got out of the Army when he was twenty or whatever.
