Torn Curtain Lyrics
Torn curtain reveals another play.
Torn curtain, such an expose!
I'm uncertain when beauty meets abuse.
Torn curtain loves all ridicule.
(Tears, tears) Rolling back the years
(Years, years) Flowing by like tears.
(Tears, tears) Rolling back the years.
(Years. years) The years I've seen before
Torn curtain giving me the glance.
Torn curtain it's bringing on the trance.
I'm not hurting, holding to the thread.
Torn curtain lifts me on the tread.
(Tears, tears) Rolling back the years
(Years, years) Holding back the tears.
(Tears, tears) Rolling by like years.
(Years. years) The tears I never shed.
Torn curtain, feels more like a rake.
Torn curtain, how much does it take?
Burn it down
(Tears, tears) Rolling back the years
(Years, years) Holding back the tears.
(Tears, tears) Rolling back the years.
(Years. years) The years I've seen before
(Tears, tears) (Years, years) 'guitar solo'
(Tears, tears) (Years, years)

Best song on Marquee Moon by far by the best guitar rock band of the seventies. Makes Led Zeppelin look like Simple Plan.
My sister bought this album yesterday and the whole family listened to it. I loved all of it, especially the guitar on Marquee Moon, but it's this song that's been baunting me. I just keep hearing it in my head, a bit like a bad dream that you're not quite ready to wake up from. I agree with RettAlexis that Television is unlike anything I have heard, but even before I read the liner notes on band influences I could hear heavy strains of the Velvet Underground. This song has the same feel to it as Venus in Furs, possibly one of the darkest songs ever written.
finding oneself looking back to a difficult episode in the past & trying to come to terms with it

PURE GENIUS: that's all.
is Torn Curtain supposed to be Tom? the words Tom Verlaine are pretty similar to Torn Curtain.
viciou5, i think what you mentioned is very interesting. I never realized that, but i think it must be some sort of play on "Tom Verlaine" The words are just too similar, especially is you look at "rn" from far, it looks like "m".
I'm not exactly sure what the song means, but it goes well with a lot of the ideas from the other songs on the album, like the idea of contradictions.
Yes, Pure genius. Television is one of the few bands where I can honestly say, I haven't heard anything remotely like this before.
I think it's about a girl losing her virginity, with the curtain symbolizing the hymen. The lines "When beauty meets abuse", "Feels more like a rake", as well as the references to flowing (as in the blood that flows when the hymen is torn) back this up.
I think it's about domestic abuse.
FWIW, "Torn Curtain" is the title of a Hitchcock film. A Cold War spy thriller.
