Did I have a dream?
Or did the dream have me?
Set off on a night-sea journey
Without memory or desire
Drifting through lost latitudes
With no compass and no chart
Flying through hallucination
Distant voices, signal fires
Lighting up my unconscious
And the secret places of the heart
Dream - Temporary madness
Dream - A voice in the wilderness
Dream - Unconscious revelations
The morning says, the answer is yes
Floating through a darkened mirror
Deep reflections in disguise
Soaring through lost altitudes
Without wonder, without fear
Symbols on a field of visions
Behind the curtain of sleeping eyes
On the instant of waking
Another world of dreams appears
Dream - A walk in the wilderness
Dream - Unconscious recreation
The morning says, the answer is yes
Or did the dream have me?
Without memory or desire
Drifting through lost latitudes
With no compass and no chart
Distant voices, signal fires
Lighting up my unconscious
And the secret places of the heart
Dream - A voice in the wilderness
Dream - Unconscious revelations
The morning says, the answer is yes
Deep reflections in disguise
Soaring through lost altitudes
Without wonder, without fear
Behind the curtain of sleeping eyes
On the instant of waking
Another world of dreams appears
Dream - Unconscious recreation
The morning says, the answer is yes

THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS... "did i have a dream of did the dream have me?" = egoic spiritual confusion based on the world of illusion.
...hence... "flying through hallucination." referring to illusions... or unmanifested visions
Explains a dream in Neil's eyes.
i think its more than just neil describing a dream...if you read his book Ghost Rider this could be another description of the way he looked at his journey. or to come from another viewpoint going with the dream idea throughout his book he constantly says things like "didnt get much sleep last night because of the dream" meaning he had a dream about his wife or daughter and it knocked him down a couple rungs on his ladder.
MORE ON THE MEANING....
the following is a description of the journey... undertaken without hope...
The dream here is Neil Peart's life experience. He was dealing with the death of his child and his wife. The dream was that traumatic experience. It's not a literal dream, but sometimes things that happen in life and then you recover from them can feel like a dream. This is a very personal song and look into Neil's life.
