Best I Can Lyrics
I've got a livin' that's rough, a future that's tough
You know what I mean
Blankers and boasters, all the bluffers and posers
I'm not into that scene
You can tell me that I got no class
Look around, you'll see who's laughin' last
Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll
Leave me alone, let me rock and roll
Got an itchin' to rock, a hate for small talk
I'm funny that way
Got my sights on the stars, won't get that far
But I'll try anyway
I just like to please, don't like to tease
I'm easy like that
Don't like long rests, I must confess
I'm an impatient cat
I do the best that I can
I'm just what I am
I do the best I can
Well, I know what I am
Rock and roll-in's a scream, makin' millions my dream
Well, I do that a lot
I'll just give it a try, won't let good times pass me by
They're all I've got
You know what I mean
Blankers and boasters, all the bluffers and posers
I'm not into that scene
Look around, you'll see who's laughin' last
Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll
Leave me alone, let me rock and roll
I'm funny that way
Got my sights on the stars, won't get that far
But I'll try anyway
I just like to please, don't like to tease

Don't like long rests, I must confess
I'm an impatient cat
I'm just what I am
I do the best I can
Well, I know what I am
Well, I do that a lot
I'll just give it a try, won't let good times pass me by
They're all I've got

I believe Neil wrote these lyrics. I think it's just about the way he wants to live his life, and doesn't care what others think about him.
Pretty meaningful to me right now. Especially the part at the beginning about other people's views.
Here's how I see them:
Blankers is difficult to define. Urban dictionary says "A highly offensive word to a white person." Doesn't make sense, because Rush is white. But if they have humor about themselves, then good on them.
Boasters is someone who boasts. In my life, I have seen a lot of classmates or just people my age who seem to base their life on how good they're doing at college.
Bluffers are people that bluff / lie. It reminds me of teachers and others who told me they cared about my future.
Posers want to impress others. Posers are the boasters that want to impress society. Like taking the paved way of life is the right way.
I could probably say something about every lyric, but I'll just leave it at that.
to me, this song means do whatever makes you happy and stop thinking of everyone else (Don't give me speeches 'cause they're oh so droll Leave me alone, let me rock and roll)... i really love the line: "Got my sights on the stars, won't get that far But I'll try anyway" it's a really encouraging piece of music and good to listen to whenever you are discouraged
A great song that is about just wanting to do what you want and put the rest of the world in the back of your mind
This song was actually written by Geddy, because Neil wasn't in Rush when they wrote it.
The extras section of the DVD has a clip showing Geddy, Alex, and John Rutsey playing this songon some small stage, probably a high school. I guess for some reason they shelved it from their debut album and put it on Fly by Night. Oh, and on the album credits this song only has credit for (Lee), the rest of the songs have Neil credited for lyrics.
Meant to say DVD of "Beyond the Lighted Stage" lol

I don't see why they shelved it from the original album. It would have easily been my favorite. Some of Geddy's best lyrics.

Cracking song. A young, ambitious Neil. It reflects his sensibilities of social interactions, hard work and ambition.
Written during a time where they must be questioning their own creative output, it doesn’t matter if he makes it or not, he’s just going to work his hardest to try and achieve his goals.
