Sugarless Lyrics

shelling out what you need
there’s no time for self-esteem
take your carbon pill tonight
have a seat for the fight
way too late to come off smart
leave your mask inside its box
smile cold anatomy
teeth like stars you start to freeze

you can’t wake up
never wake up
can’t wake up
seems to me like there’s really no reason

impossible day
i don’t complain
i’m over it i guess
scattered and grey so
i hold it back
and keep it sugarless

you just caved in yeah
it came from nowhere
you just caved in
it came from nowhere

There seems to be an aire of definance in "I hold it back / and keep it sugarless," when compared to the notion that this person could otherwise have some right to complain, or has just come to realize she/he's "over it." I picture this being about a romantic relationship, possibly from the point of view of someone having come out of one bruised and now teetering on the cusp of going back in for another... unexpectedly; so let's put on a smile ("teeth like stars") and see with guarded optimism ("I hold it back") what might happen with this sudden adventure's materialization.

well, i think this song is about a couple breaking up.

"impossible day i don’t complain i’m over it i guess scattered and grey so i hold it back and keep it sugarless"

i think eugene and carla are the both parts of that couple, so guy and girl, that's why the refrain is song twice. they both feel the same way about their relationship. you see, that they aren't really over it, cause they add "i guess" at the end of that line, making them look uncertain. so they somehow still feel for each other, but don't admit it to themselves. but they both don't wanna go on, so that they keep their upcoming emotions "sugarless" ("i hold it back and keep it sugarless"). well ... in the end one part realizes the situation and caves in ... just without a reason ("you just caved in yeah. it came from nowhere")

I see it as someone depressed, but they don’t really show it. They seem happy to the outside world but really they aren’t.

"there’s no time for self-esteem take your carbon pill tonight"

I guess the carbon pills are anti dep. but they don’t want to take them because they don’t help. Hence, it seeming to be made of carbon.

"smile cold anatomy"

Seeming happy when your not?

The chorus is pretty much just about how the person is going through day by day unhappy but not complaining about it and just keeps trying to move ahead holding everything inside.

And the last part about caving in is just how all of that pressure finally took its toll.

Just my view on the song...

Carbon Pills are used to treat poisoning and overdose, which I think gives this song a whole new meaning, more akin to a Failure tune maybe? ;)

This person seems to have lost his lust for life.

Why does everyone seem to think all songs refer to relationships? There's not a hint of that here.

Like a lot of their songs it relates to keeping up a facade in society, a hangover from a sleepless night.

Anybody google what carbon pills are?

I did, they're used to treat overdose. This gives this song WHOLE new meaning.
