this is another masterpiece from pink floyd..I also recommend "sky cries mary" version..its very good..
I see it as a young man growing up, the promised land being home and family. He's on the outside looking in--still single. "Flash the readies", a big smile, while he works to pay his bills. But he's alone, no one to talk to.
Then the promised land comes to him, and he grabs it with both hands. He takes comfort by the fire, next to his love. So comforting it is, that he says, "If she prefers, we will never stir again."
Now he is on the inside looking out. In his old age, he shouts a hearty greeting to friends that come visiting.

thanks crimsonan clover... this song has a lot of meaning to me... I am hearing it for the second time.... its about a person who feels left out by life... particulary by a broke relationship... it's so... memory flash backing... I feel I'm asking to my ex to come back with me... ohhh :'(
You sure it's not "Turn my lead into gold" ? That makes more sense to me... Great Great song, I think it's about never being where you want to be. Being on the outside looking in.. then then inside looking out. :)

WHY IS THIS NOT ON ECHOES: THE GREATEST HITS? I love it. Really speaks out to me, with Mudmen. It just shows how beautiful they could write when they wanted to write optimistic tunes.
My favorite Gloyd song. It's as close to "a peace that passeth all understanding" as one can find in music.
I can't believe this song hasn't won more acclaim. Maybe because it's slow almost dreamlike and doesn't make a strong impression on most people. I can often hear this song playing over and over in my head almost like someone slowly breathing and whispering it. The voice is so pure and rejuevenating like a mountain stream. Best of it all this song sounds like an angel from heaven when one is very lit...

I've recently been reading about Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. This song was written in the early 70s, after Syd's mental illness made him unable to function, and I think it's written about the brilliant but mentally ill Syd Barrett, or, more precisely, Syd is the speaker in the song. Barrett, as the founder of Pink Floyd, did very much become a sad and angry man "on the outside looking in," and his mental illness, which made him burn so brightly, and ultimately, burn out, deeply affected the band and its music for many years, even after they no longer had any contact with him. They originally tried to help him 'find the key' -- both musically, when he became unable to play -- and figuratively, as in the "key" to sanity. Sadly, Barrett never did find his way back in. For instance, Gillmore would work with him before recording sessions, in vain attempts to teach him the songs. But Barrett was too far gone by then, lost in his own world. This song has a haunting resonance -- a bittersweet connection to the band's founder who always remained a haunting presence in their midst.
