Because the Night (Patti Smith Group cover) Lyrics
Take me now baby here as I am
Pull me close try and understand
I work all day out in the hot sun
Break my own back till the mornin' comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
What I got I have earned
What I'm not I have learned
Desire and hunger is the fire I breathe
Just stay in my bed till the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
Because the night...
Your love recedes with doubt
The vicious circle turns and burns without
Though I cannot live forgive me now
The time has come to take this moment and
They can't hurt you now
Because the night...
Pull me close try and understand
I work all day out in the hot sun
Break my own back till the mornin' comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to us
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
What I'm not I have learned
Desire and hunger is the fire I breathe
Just stay in my bed till the morning comes
Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take me now as the sun descends
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
They can't hurt you now
The vicious circle turns and burns without
Though I cannot live forgive me now
The time has come to take this moment and
They can't hurt you now

I happen to like this version better than the Patti Smith and 10,000 maniacs version as well. Maybe it's because the lyrics are different. The version Bruce has done has different lyrics. If you notice in the 10,000 maniacs/Patti Smith version there is no part about working all day and so forth (the whole first stanza, the second stanza is different as well). Maybe adaptations were made to the lyrics so they could better fit a women's perspective. Interesting. I don't know just guessing. Any way great song.
I don't know.....
I'm rather fond of the 10,000 Maniacs version. Whenever I here Springsteen sing, it sounds to me like he's gonna throw up.
this was originally written by Bruce Springsteen for Darkness on the Edge of Town, but it didn't fit in with the rest of the album. Patti Smith was working on her album Easter in the same studio and the pair exchanged tapes or something and she reworked the song, changing the lyrics
i prefer the Patti Smith version, though I do like this version as well. I've not heard 10,000 Manics
covered by 10,000 maniacs
...but done far better by the Boss
far, FAR better by the boss. aren't most things?
most things? thats a bit of an understatement, dont you think?
covered by 10,000 maniacs? Aren't you forgeting Patti Smith who (supposedly) co-wrote it with Bruce and recorded it first!
This song by Bruce always makes me think of a girl that i'm really attracted to who isn't my wife....it's a bit dangerous to me...but I still love it;-)
I do enjoy the song, as well as much of Bruce's work, but if the song conjures up such thoughts and feelings in you, perhaps it is best to leave the song out of your current listening selection.
