Cheers Darlin' Lyrics

Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover boy
Cheers darlin'
I got years to wait around for you
Cheers darlin'
I've got your wedding bells in my ear
Cheers darlin'
You give me three cigarettes to smoke my tears away

And I die when you mention his name
And I lied, I should have kissed you
When we were running in the rain

What am I darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?

Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover man
Cheers darlin'
I just hang around and eat from a can
Cheers darlin'
I got a ribbon of green on my guitar
Cheers darlin'
I got a beauty queen
To sit not very far from here

I die when he comes around
To take you home
I'm too shy
I should have kissed you when we were alone

What am I darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?

Oh what am I? What am I darlin'?
I got years to wait

i guess the explanation he made at his concert makes sense but i really thought this song was deeper than just meeting a girl at a bar and wishing he had made a move. the way he describes it sounds like he had a lot of history and emotional connection with the girl...i don't know, the first time i heard this song i just thought it was really powerful

@dancer135 This is something I have observed, Damien uses false short explanations to just make the audience laugh, the actually events that inspired lyrics were much tragic and probably occurred with different persons

When I saw him live he explained this one. He was in a bar and had this really deep conversation with this girl. He really felt they connected, but at the end of the night she told him that her husband was waiting for her. To quote Damien "A bitter and drunk song writer came home after that and put this song together".

This song makes me want to drink heavily into depression...I love it though

I think the great thing about songs like this is that even if the artist wrote them because of something else they can mean anything to you.

i think this is about a man watching the girl he's always wanted marry someone else. And he and the girl are friends so he still has to see her all the time. What kills him is that she doesn't notice the pain that he's in, or if she does, she never really connects the dots. Which upsets him because they're supposed to be friends.

This song always make me think of jim and pam from the office.

I saw Damien Rice in concert last year and he explained the whole thing. What happened was he was sitting in a bar while outside it was throwing it down with rain. Through the window he saw two people running and, by accident, they crashed into each other. The man got up apologised and asked if he could buy the now soaking wet woman a drink. They went into a bar and had a few drink and got talking really well, but after quite some time when the man asked if she wanted another she replied 'Sorry, my boyfriend will be wondering where i am' and then left. Damien went over to talk and together they wrote the song about how the guy had fallen for her only to be crushed by her being already taken. Excellent song, didn't used to like it until it was all explained, now it's my favourite on the album.

This song is one of the most emotional songs on his album. I jus LOVE the bitterness and hate conveyed in his voice when he talks about the other guy

" I DIE when you mention his name" Man you gotta LOVE that line lol. I listened to this for day after day for weeks...This girl that I liked had broken up with her boyfriend because he cheated on her but she still liked him...Everytime she mentioned him, I would just break down inside...

i think this one's clear cut. you like a girl, you have an opportunity to make your move and you pass it up. she ends up with some other dude and your get all pissed off and wonder what could have been... then you say "ahh fuck you guy, she made a big mistake" after like 15 beers.

I always thought it was "I should've kissed you when we were out in the rain"- it just makes more poetic sense...
