Personally I think this song represents Depeche Mode's comeback since the release of SOFAD... they're trying to tell us that their fire still burns.

This is Martin's retrospect of how he has touch so many fans and want to continue to do so with Depeche Mode. Hence the phase, " And the spirit of love. Is rising within me. Talking to you now. Telling you clearly. The fire still burns.

Here's the spiritual meaning:

(Of course, these guys have had extraodinary lives so far. Their Higher Soul has led them everywhere to experience some amazing things and lessons in life. Soul dance referes to everyone we meet and love, but also hurt or get hurt by - these "Soul Deals" were made before we even incarnated.)

(I think Fire still burn to me means that they are still feeling, learning, hurting, loving - all those not so mundane emotions :-)

Obviously this song is about missing an ex-girlfriend.

I think there are always things about ex-girlfriends that a guy will miss and memories that he will long for regardless of why the break-up occured. A lot of relationships end because of immaturatiy. 'Insight' will always remind me of an ex-girlfriend who liked this song when we were in college.

This song gives me goose bumps! This is a great song me and my bf like because after being together so long, the "fire" is still there!

I heard few songs from Depeche Mode, but "insight"...wow! what a song! i love it

I'm sure a great many people know about the personal demons of all members of the band around the time this song was written and composed (1995 to 1996).Maybe it's Martin's way of telling us he knows the future (for the band) is still clear full of hope and dare I say it... "Love"

i love when martin and dave sing together. they're so great together.

you could also make a case that Martin wrote this song with Dave in mind: "this is a strange flight i'm taking" could be a reference to dave's past troubles and "this is the first chance, to put things right" is dave getting back on track
