Oh, ah
Oh, ah, yeah
Oh, ah
Oh, ah, ah
Oh, ah-ah
Oh-oh-oh, ah-ah, yeah

Ah, oh, oh, ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh

I am bottled fizzy water
And you are shaking me up
You are a fingernail running down
The chalkboard I thought I left in third grade
Now my only consolation
Is that this could not last forever
Even though you're singing and thinking
How well you've got it made

Who are you?
When will you be through
Yeah, it's just a phase
It will be over soon
Yeah, it's just a phase
Yeah, it's just a
Phase

Call it women's intuition
But I think I'm on to something here
Temporaryism has been the Black Plague
And the Jesus of our age
I know that I sound opinionated
Maybe biased and quite possibly jaded
But sooner than later they'll be throwing
Quarters at you on stage

Who are you?
When will you be through
Yeah, it's just a phase
It will be over soon
Yeah, it's just a
Phase, and I'm waiting for it to be over, too

Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah, oh-oh
Yeah

    My Interpretation

I believe the lyrics to this song is intended to be written in transition from a first to third person stand point. The first person portrayal of the song is when brandon is saying "I," example: but I think I'm on to something here... this is when he tends to make statements and then he kind of transcends his statements to his internal thoughts, which are typically generated conclusions to his first-person statements. His third person assumptions are like "but sooner or later they'll be throwing quarters on stage." Brandon's an artist, a musician- someone who's life entitles going on stage. So maybe he's suggesting that in his current state of mind (when he was writing this song) was that he's scared that that's what it's eventually going to come to... his last lyric was "yeh, it's just a phase and I am waiting for it to be over too!" Maybe he's just waiting for his current state of mind to subside...

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
