First Time Lyrics

I had never thought
We were hanging on
But the fall looks very far
Staring at the ground
What flesh will do to you
Will do to me too
Be free and on your own
It's not that simple
It's never that simple
It feels like the first time
That we'd fallen behind
And we faltered too far down
No one could save us
It feels like the first time
And we're standing about them
And no one can touch us
The worst is over
I could say to you
A bitter word or two
There's no stopping now
Just get it out in the air
Heard it through the fog
And hurt by it all
I'd take it back today
But it's out of my hands
Lost in the film again
All the signs were showing
Watching a single frame
When the wind begins
You're never anywhere
'Cause you're caught in my
weather every time
Feels like the first time
We'd fallen behind
No use is the other one to wait
But I can hold on
As sure as I'm strong
Get over the faithful yesterdays

this is one of my favourite songs of all-time and the greatest canadian song ever (except maybe clumsy by Our Lady Peace) its about being caught up in life and falling behind so much that you don't feel like living anymore. the chorus means that it feels like the first time this happened, so this person keeps feeling like this all the time.

I think he says 'It feels like the first time, and we're standing above them', instead of 'It feels like the first time, and we're standing about them.' If this is so, then it somewhat could change the meaning of the song, in that the person feels as if they've hit bottom, and there's nothing anyone can do to harm them now, hence the "and no one can touch us" line. I may be completely wrong, but that's just what I think.

punk in drublic... when I first heard this song (which was also the first time I saw the music video) I kind of assumed this was about the band and how they've been becoming more popular... just an opinion.

I think it's about a relationship turning to crap. He didn't think they were hanging on, he was trying to be an indivual and kept changing and that made his girlfriend like him less and they started to fall behind and get into fights. He didn't really notice how bad it was untill it was too late. The whole "lost in the film again" part is when he's looking at old pictures of them. "Watching a single frame When the wind begins." Thats the picture he notices her being more sad. I'm sure you can get the rest. This song reminds me of more happier times before me and my ex broke up, obviously that affected me a lot.

i think he writes this song after whatever it is has happened and he's looking back at it. during the "event" he didn't think there was anything wrong but now when he thinks about it again, all the signs of whatever it was were already showing. i'm not sure if this is a relationship song or just a song about life in general, but either way, it's great. the lead singer has one hell of a voice and can't really appreciated unless heard live.

I really like this song. When I first heard Finger Eleven I hated them but this song's great. Much better than Above (argh, that god awful song).

Above is a great song, Our Lady Peace is Your Piece of Shit, and even after all that, I agree, Finger Eleven is ONE AMAZING BAND!

As for the meaning of the lyrics, good question, listens to song, the "...and we're standing ABOVE them..." refers to the "hanging on...fall is too far" part, they were barely hanging on, but still above those who had already fallen into the proverbial "pit" and the "But I can hold on, as sure as I'm strong..." refers to how he is willing to fight for what it is he believes in "Get over the faithful yesterdays" means that the past is the past, as good or as bad as it was, they'll have to start over...

...thats my take on it anyhow...
