Long Black Veil (Lefty Frizzell cover) Lyrics
Ten years ago on a cold dark night
Someone was killed beneath the townhall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me
The judge said "son, what is your aliby?
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die."
I said not a word, though it meant my life,
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife.
Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil.
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Oh, now the scaffold is high, eternity is near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
And sometimes at night when the cold winds blow
In a long black veil she cries over my bones.
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Nobody knows. nobody knows, but me.
Nobody knows but me.

Was this song originally written by DMB, or is it a cover? I haven't been able to find out.
you are right, the band played the song, but M.J.Wilkin and D.Dill wrote it. i didn't find them being part of the band at any time........a kickass song by the way =)
I love this song! Dave does an awesome job with it. It's obviously about an affair (between his best friend's wife and himself). It's a great song, very sad too!
yeah, nothing like dying for forbibben love.
i think that this song is a great song that tells how much ones friendship means, even though he did cheat with his wife he died wrongfully to keep it a secret

this song is originally by 'the band' i think, cant remember too well; the meaning is quite literal i believe, what a sad song, dave sings it so well
Try Marian Faithful and Joan Baez. It's quite "touchy" when i listened to the song sung by these two women.
does anybody recall Johnny Cash? I have a hunch this is his song. Check it out.
In 1959, Lefty Frizzel sang this song in his 1959 albumn.
