suicide. beautiful song. makes me sad and happy at the same time.

not sure, either about suicide or running away from home. i think most likely its about running away from home though.

its about suicide... the reference to the note and a funeral, the line about martyrdom.

I heard this song and adopted it as my 'theme song' a while ago, when I was going through a rough time and was considering suicide. ((That's something that few of my friends know, but for some reason, I'm not afraid to post it here...)) It spoke to me (as most Guster songs do), telling everyone my outlook on life: "I'm going to go quietly, by myself. You've been less that appreciative of me, so maybe you'll notice me once I'm gone, maybe you'll apologize, but you can't deny it. I'm too scared of the future to live in it, and I don't want to become one of THEM. Don't think I was an amazing person - I wasn't - I didn't do it to test myself, and nobody else had any part in it - it was MY decision."

now that i read everyone's posts, the suicide interpretation is pretty obvious, and makes the most sense.

but actually, my first instinct of this song was there were some references to jesus christ. anyone else think that? especially the lines about "i am not to be martyred" and "they'll gather in my name"

Not so sure about the Christ reference... definitely a sad but beautiful song that I think takes a very accurate look at what goes through the head of somone who wants to commit suicide...

don't think christ at all. "they'll gather in my name" is a reference to the mourning, not the lord. if the actual spelling in that lyric is actually "morning", then that's a witty play on it.
