Hunter Lyrics

With one light on in one room, I know you're up when I get home
With one small step upon the stair, I know your look when I get there
If you were a king up there on your throne, would you be wise enough to let me go
For this queen you think you own
Wants to be a hunter agin, wants to see the world alone again
To take a chance on life again, so let me go
The unread book and painful look, the tv's on, the sound is down
One long pause then you begin, oh look what the cat's brought in
If you were a king up on your throne, would you be wise enough to let me go
For this queen you think you own
Wants to be a hunter again, wants to see the world alone again
To take a chance on life again, so let me go, let me leave
For the crwon you've placed upon my head feels too heavy now
And I don't know what to say but I'll smile anyhow
And all the time I'm thinking, thinking
I want to be a hunter again, want to see the world again
To take a chance on life again, so let me go

I disagree that it`s a father figure, because the man is a "king" and she is the "queen".

"For this crown youve placed upon my head, it feels too heavy now" How I can relate to this.. Its the situation when your lover sees you as "the one", and thinks you are perfect. Instead of satisfaction, you feel the constant pressure of living up to this standard, and avoid disappointing your partner. It gets tiring.

"And I don't know what to say to you, but I smile anyhow" So, so sad.. When theres nothing to complain about, when your relationship is perfect and everything falls into place, you still find yourself unhappy at times. What can you say to the happy person beside you? He couldnt understand you; not even you understand yourself.

I don't think the guy was being bad to her, she simply wanted more from the life she had with him. Maybe this life wasn't bad, but it's like she still had a lot more to live, and she had forgotten about it, but now she's ready to pursuit again. :)

I think it's about a lady who is sick of being protected and everything by her boyfriend/lover/husband, and she wants to be "free" again

She's been so controlled and harboured for so long that she has lost her individuality. She wants to experience things and take risks...and fall if that's what it takes!! She's craving independence and adventure, instead of the stagnant, expected life she's in now!!!.

It's Lady Diana...

My Opinion

I agree with most of what's been said before, but just something I think is really cool: Dido obviously has knowledge of mythology (her name is the name of Aeneas' lover-Queen who he abandons to go to Rome and who later kills herself), and I think she brings some of that knowledge into the song. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the story of Hippolyta, but it really fits. She's an Amazon queen (Amazons are hunters) who gets stolen away from her kingdom by Theseus and is forced to be his wife. There's an allusion to this in a Midsummer Night's dream, as Hippolyta is Theseus' bride, and there is some friction between them. I don't want to sound like a stuffy snob, I just thought Hippolyta's myth fits in really well with this song, as an independent woman (amazon) is yearning for freedom.

I agree 100% with toastguy. I had heard this song after reading "Bull from the Sea" a historical fiction novel about Theseus' life (the writer, Mary Renault, incorporates the mythology in a realistic way... it's a great book, highly recommended but you should read "The King Must Die" first!)

Anyways, Hippolyta is an amazonian queen that is pretty much taken from her land/community and forced to marry Theseus (though in Renault's version she ends up falling in love with him). I heard this song and thought of her instantly, she's so wild and free and in the...

I think the song is about that awkward stage in a relationship that is failing, where the end is near (for one of you anyway).

The time in a relationship where you know it is over, but you haven't completely formed "The End" in your mind, but you are already picturing your future life alone.

I agree with the above.I love this song(one of my favourite of this album) and I find the part "oh look what the cat's brought in" very funny.I have to say that Dido has an excellent voice

Drugs? I don't see it. I think it's about someone who's been overly controlled and protected, and wants to be on her own again and take chances... experience things. Basically what everyone else said.
