Fat Old Sun Lyrics
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's thunder time of year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells
New mown grass smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is...(fades out)
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's thunder time of year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells
New mown grass smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you see
Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me
Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is...(fades out)

wow this is definately not abot drugs u guys are retarded just because their music is nice to listen to under the influence doesent mean the tried to make it for that and why would a band who barely uses write about drugs(gilmour smoked once mason and wright did it occasionaly neaning once a month or so and waters doesent like it the only member who did was barret)this is simply about summertime and knowing good times wont last forever if you think they get fucked up and write music please go listen to some ratt or tool
I'm about 2 decades late to the ball on this one, but I recently dusted off my 50 year old album. As a guitarist, I always found David's solo on this to be underrated (especially the Pompeii and Gdansk versions). The fact he plays it a lot, clearly indicates that -- as one of his very first songs -- there is great meaning and feeling for him. Certainly not the kind of reminiscing one would experience thinking about smoking pot 55 years ago. I used to get high, too (then I grew up about 36 years ago when I turned 30). So many references of drugs from a lot of stoners on this thready. Look, I went to middle school, high school and college from 1970 to 1980 and did all kinds of drugs. You can be happy -- and even write songs -- without being stoned out of your flippin' mind.
As a 67 year old and one who has written songs myself reflecting on my youth, that is all this is. As a matter of fact, when DSOTM and Time came out a few years later, I thought about Fat Old Sun again because it has a similar feeling. But, if you need to find drug references in everything, good luck...but I hope you find some help before you get really stupid.
At the beginning of the song, you can hear bells ringing - the same bells used for "High Hopes" on "The Division Bell". This is a great, mellow song with a very catchy (if somewhat derivative) guitar solo. My favorite song from Atom Heart Mother.
This song is about dying. The sun is falling symbolizes the end of your life. Evening birds... distant bells. And if you, are there to witness my end, then sing me to sleep.
I've listened to this song so many times that has- got to be it.
Noone has taking a crack at this one either I take it. Number 4 on my list...
Only thing I could think of here was pills. I know someone like a mother could sit back with perscribed Zanax and sit in the back year while the "Fat Old Sun goes down and her kids are playing peacefully in the yard. Any other ideas?? Anyone?
The lyrics are actually summer sunday and a year and a time so strange should be a tongue so strange
And if this is about any drug Aminals, I think it should be Marijuana. The lines roll me up and lay me down, and lift your feet up off the ground ( a feeling of floating), plus the relaxed tone of the song, make me think that if it's referring to any drug its got to be that.
They played this song at Storm Thorgerson's funeral not too long ago...so maybe it has something to do with death or mourning
Thorgerson is not dead, what are you talking about?
Thorgerson is not dead, what are you talking about?
anyone know of or ever wonder what the origin of "summer sunday and a year" is? jim morrison also used it:
I see you live on Love Street There's this store where the creatures meet I wonder what they do in there Summer Sunday and a year
