Gaia Lyrics

A new serum eradicates the illness
An old man rises from his wheelchair
When suffering unknown attacks the painless
And common animals are becoming rare

As water spins in circles twice
Spiders, snakes and the little mice
Get twisted around and tumble down
When Nature calls we all shall drown

If the earth is dying of a growing thirst
Rain shall fall on dried out soil
And every kind of bud shall burst
A sough of relief to insects - turmoil

As water spins in circles twice
Spiders, snakes and the little mice
Get twisted around and tumble down
When Nature calls we all shall drown

I don't think this song has anything to do with environmentalism or environmental protection. Edlund's philosophy is completely different, it's more contemplative. And it's clearly shown here. Nature takes care of itself. It has its own cycles, like the water cycle, and it is nature, the planet (Gaia) that decides when we live and when we die. According to its laws, the aeons change, according to its laws there are ‘new serum’ to ‘eradicate the illness’, according to its laws after drought comes rain. The role of man in this Edlund's worldview is very small, and man himself is insignificant before the greatness of the universe, and so spiders, snakes and the little mice are obviously about us too, man is implied somewhere along this line.

This songs class. The third line tells you what the entire song's about. It's about humanity's mistreatment of the planet. "Common animals are becoming rare", "A new serum eradicates the illness"..

Great song. Great live! Sounds a lot like it is about the mistreatment of the earth. But I am confused with this passage:

If the earth is dying of a growing thirst Rain shall fall on dried out soil

What does this mean? This sounds like there is some hope despite the human thirst. What kind of? Is this about the flooding and Noah's ship?
