Darts Lyrics

May i please remain in this space,
for darts screach by my desires,
may i please remain in this space,
for darts screach by my desires,

art thou not human man (x 8)
not human man art thou

life threatening lifestyles,
a hitman, a nun, lovers,
life threatening lifestyles,
a hitman, a nun, lovers,

art thou not human man (x 8)
not human man art thou

clock men for they will fail,
fear not the gods that come from the sky,
long not for the one who've lost their way,

arise as did the gods Ninti,
arise as did the gods Ninti,
arise as did the gods Ninti, and Ishkur, Ishkur.

I don't agree with FreeThinker863. Why should SOAD sing a song against homosexuality? They are no fascists or something like that. Homosexuality is no crime, we live in the 21 century!

I think this is a song about mankind itself. Mankind isn't human anymore. The people do too many crazy things. They are more artificial than natural. ("art thou not human man) Our whole life became paradox more and more. The society changed. This is shown in the phrase "A Hitman, a nun, lovers?!". So how can a Hitman and a nun get together? Become lovers? A Hitman kills, a nun believes in god and love. But a time will come where the gods take the people to where they come from. To there roots. ("Fear not the gods that come from the sky.") And after that the mankind will arise "as did the gods Ninti and Iskur". Unfortunately I dunno who these gods are, maybe some of u guys could help me.

Ninti was the Sumerian goddess of life, Ishkur the Sumerian storm-god. Both are no longer worshiped as gods.

@Tha Prophet To piggyback off of that, I'd say this whole song is definitely about mythology. It might be possible that the title of the song, "Darts," is a reference to Cupid's darts:

May I please remain in this space For darts screech by my desires

Whoever is shot by one of Cupid's darts has no control over his sexual lusts. He can't stay put. He has to stalk the woman he's been smitten with. "Can I please for once, be able to NOT be influenced by one of Cupid's darts, manipulating my feelings?"

Art thou...

The gods Ninti and Ishkur are as follows:

Ninti There is a region called Dilmun in the land of Sumer. This is a pure, clean, shining land where gods live. Sickness and death is unknown there. But they had no water so Enki called upon the Sun God to bring water to the surface and fill the region with it. Son God did as requested. The whole region became a garden of gods with gardens and fields everywhere. Here the Earth Goddess Ninhursag planted eight trees. They grew and Enki tasted the fruits of each of them. Eath Goddess was furious, she cursed Enki and disappeared. Enki became very ill. Other gods found Ninhursag and pleaded with her to treat Enki. Enki's eight organs needed treatment one for each of the trees. So Ninhursag created eight entities one for each organ. Five of these entities were female and the rest males. One of the eight organs were the rib and the goddess created to treat this rib was named Nin-ti ( Nin: lady, ti: rib) "the lady of the rib". Another meaning of "ti" was "life", mmaking Nin-ti "the lady of life". This story appears in the Old Testament and in Qoran. And in its passage from Sumerian myths to the Old Testament, treating the rib has become creation from the rib. "The Lady of life" became the Old Testament's Havva (Eve).

Adad ( Sumerian Ishkur, West Semitic Hadad or Addu ) Weather god of the Babylonian and Assyrian pantheons. As god of storms he was both giver and destroyer of life. Son of Anu (An),the god of heaven. His consort was Shalash. Also a god of oracles and divination. The bull and the lion were sacred to him, as was the number six. The cypress was his symbol.

Ninti and Ishkur(Iskur, correct spelling) are both mesopotamian deities. Myths. This song is quite simple. We want what we want without considering the consequences. Even what seems good and righteous comes with consequences. Human nature is to take and give nothing. There is no good within any of us since our biggest fault is judging one another which can have severe consequences as ' the hitman '. We're rotten to the core.

@Peril I hadn't thought about the song in that way… the idea that even good intentions have consequences is pretty eye-opening

The line "arise as did the gods, Ninti" is a call for women to rise up, as Ninti was esentially the first woman, Eve.

To the guy that thinks the song about homosexuality...you have to be the most retarded person alive.

I think this song is contrasting humanity vs divinity, along with what would tempt a person.

There are some parallels to be made of Ninti and Ishkar to other figures. Elements of the story of the Garden of Eden existed long before the bible was first assembled, and Ninti shares some of Eve's background. Ishkur I do not know, but saying that both these gods arose leads me to believe that they are associated with the Garden of Eden when you consider other elements of the song.

The thing that confused me the most is what was meant by "darts." Its a euphemism for something, but I wasn't sure. Its apparently common for cigarettes or syringes used for heroin. Knowing the line "For darts screech by my desires", I think its referring to being tempted away from the garden due to your humanistic desires. "May I please remain in this place" I believe refers to the garden of eden, and it appears that from the perspective of the character in the lyrics that they would be asking for forgiveness.

"art thou not human man" I think is where the contrasting between humanity and divinity starts to come into play. The only other thing that these mythical figures could be would be gods, or something closer to divinity than man. I would like to believe that the lyrics are suggesting that being human is more worthy than what someone may originally believe. In this case, it would seem they're suggesting to not be ashamed of having desires. Factoring in the context of asking for forgiveness after having strong desires that could force you to be banished from eden reinforces that idea for me.

“life threatening lifestyles, a hitman, a nun, lovers,” I think this is highlighting how both are more similar than one may originally believe. They are both completely devoted to their work. I’m not 100% confident on what these lines are alluding to, but it may also may be a comparison to Ninti and Ishkur.

The next lines, including “clock men for they will fail,” “fear not the gods that come from the sky,” and “long not for those who’ve lost their way” make a strong case that the idea being presented is that gods are far superior to humans. I think this is completely sarcastic as evidenced per the previous lines and that its not exactly a hot take that humans aren’t perfect. Perfection is the enemy of good, and to abandon something for not being perfect is fucked up.

And finally, “Arise as did the gods Ninti [and Ihskur].” If we can believe they did come from the garden of eden, where did they arise to?

"Can you tell me 'I don't know'" Its fine to not be able to know something. You don't have to make up a fictional story to explain it.

E: Also, looks like there are others with similar interpretations. Cheers
