Billie Joe Armstrong named it platypus because he said he has always wanted to name a song platypus.
I saw an interview with him in it and he said he just felt like it, no reason
@Someguy416 I remember him saying something along the lines of the reason he named this specific song platypus was because it was the ugliest animal he could think of at the time and he always wanted to name a song platypus and since "I Hate You" was a cliche title he named it that.

@Someguy416 actually it waa aimed towards a guy that ran the 924 gilman street where they reguarly played growing up, apparently they and many other people had a strong dislike for the man that ran the place 'tim yohannon' and like they hated him. a few years ago billie posted on his Twitter saying 'Fuck u yohannon the song platapus was ment for u (commented being written same day the man died of cancer) and was immediately deleted 1 hour later. most people don't know this u gotts really do your research.

this song is about a reporter who was insulting them and they were mad about it so they wrote this song. they were going to put it on insomniac but billie joe waited to show how mature he was and put it on nimrod instead.

This is basically the song of my teenage years. I dedicate to pretty much my entire extended family and half the assholes I went to school with.
it's about come-uppance. like "i used to patronize you and it made me feel like shit, and now everyone's letting you know what they really think of you." actually the song kind of progresses from the thought of vengeance to a string of insults (my favorite cussing line since "bad habit") to outright murder....
