Limp Lyrics
You wanna make me sick
You wanna lick my wounds, don't you, baby?
You want the badge of honor when you save my hide
But you're the one in the way of the day of doom, baby
If you need my shame to reclaim your pride
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try, you'll beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down, make me cry
Get off now, baby
It won't be long
Till you'll be lyin' limp in your own hands
You feed the beast I have within me
You wave the red flag, baby
You make it run, run, run
Standin' on the sidelines wavin' and grinning
You fondle my trigger, then you blame my gun
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try, you'll beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down, make me cry
Get off now, baby
It won't be long
Till you'll be lyin' limp in your own hands
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try, you'll beat me with your bitter lies

I was in a relationship where I was mentally and sexually abused. When i finally got the courage to leave him, I left a copy of this song in his car with a note: "I hope you're lying limp in your own hands tonight!"
This is my favorite Fiona song ever, and is one of my favorites in my life. Now, several years after having listened to it for the first time and being a very important song for me, I can say that my current situation fits so well in this song. I never thought I could relate to it the way I do it now. This is my favorite Fiona song ever, and is one of my favorites in my life. Now, several years after having listened to it for the first time and being a very important song for me, I can say that my current situation fits so well in this song. I never thought I could relate to it the way I do it now. I too, was mentally and somehow sexually abused and I am able to understand Fiona's lyrics in a way I never thought could be possible, but every single word, in every single line, describes so perfectly what I was going through and the chorus is exactly how I feel right now.
The line "You fondle my trigger, then you blame my gun" is one of the most relevant because at the end he pushed me to do things against him I wish I have avoided, and now I know he is lyin' limp in his own hands.
This song is really about manipulation and abuse in relationships. I especially like the part about provocation (you fondle my trigger..). Fiona really has a way of saying things and putting them into images. Really amazing song !
About a guy using you/abusing you. Well, she's gonna get him back! Brilliant, angry song.
this song physically makes me shake because of how badly i can relate to the lyrics and fiona's voice. amazing.
the meaning is rather obvious: she's in a conflicted relationship/friendship with someone who she once thought wanted to help her but is only getting high off of putting her down and dragging her back up. it takes a special kind of sadistic to be this sort of person and she's describing what a broken, shallow, hollow and ultimately cowardly (you'll be lying limp in your own hands - he still has to get off using her unconsented emotional pain, maybe physical? pain) person he is. i'm assuming 'he' from the metaphor.
I agree with Eggos', it's about the ''i'll fix you'' boys. I've met a few, they wanna make you out to be some terrible disaster, so they can look like the hero that's come to save you. it's about a guy with a big ego problem, who looks for a broken girl, to ''reclaim his pride''. someone to make him look really together, and at peace with himself.
I love this song... it has a little bit of an angry tint to it but Fiona definately gets her point across. "You fondle my trigger than you blame my gun." What an awesome metaphor - and so insightful!! She is amazing!
i thought this song was about her rape experience..... am i wrong?
reminded me of the same.

Oh I love this song there is so much passion into, I feel like I can totally relate because I think that to everyone there is someone that pushes you down to help themselves...I think that it is about a relationship that has gone bad, but I don't think that it's about physical abuse, it seems to be more about the mind and how fragile that one can become...*
I'm not sure who this song is directed at exactly but every time I hear "you fondle my trigger and then blame my gun" it makes me think of the relationship she had with the media at the time. By the time When the Pawn came out, Fiona was kinda being called every name in the book. She even said it herself, she went from being this sad little girl that everyone felt the need to feel sorry for to this brat/bitch character that everyone couldn't stand. This happened because of her outspokenness obviously (ie. her infamous VMA speech). When she first came out, she was well loved by critics and such. They loved the sad girl persona and they played on it a lot (ie. in every article she was in back then, they would call her "the sad/or sullen, soulful singer" or something like that because they knew they could sell that image). They did they same thing when Criminal came out, but instead they wanted to sell the sexy image she conveyed in the video. In that sense, they kept pushing her to be get attention the wrong way ("you fondle my trigger") until she explodes (her infamous VMA speech, where she tells the world that the music business is bullshit and everyone in it, including herself, is fake). Everyone then begins to blame her, calling her names like bitch, slut, crazy, hypocrite, etc etc ("then blame my gun") even though the media pushed that image on her in the first place.
I gotta say that Fiona is my favorite songwriter and I think (especially with this album) her songs can have double meanings. Of course they're about her personal relationships but they also hold a meaning with her relationship with the music business. One of my favorite lines of this whole album that made me think this is "Oh darling, it's so sweet, you think you know how crazy/How crazy I am". The media's main description of Fiona was "crazy" (it still is) and she's obviously saying "aw you think I'm crazy. That's cute, but you really have no idea." And then she kinda shows the shades of her "crazy" and explains the reasons why she's like that with the rest of the album.
