Legend Lyrics

Nelly Furtado
Legend
Whoa, Nelly!

He wants to be, he wants to be, with everything under the sun
He wants to be, he wants to be, with everything under the sun

Chorus:
And like a legend that rises and then falls I cannot be his only one

He makes me feel, he makes me feel, like you used to,
(whoa) like you used to
He makes me feel, he makes me feel, like you used to,
(whoa) like you used to

Chorus:
And like a fickle flower when it first sees the light
I cannot show just how I fight
And like a fickle flower when it first sees the light
I cannot show just how I fight

Babe I saw you walking, it was after midnight
Carrying nothing except for a flashlight
You wanted to be Romeo so low at my window
You wanted to be Romeo so low at my window
Will you open the door for me if you believe in chivalry
Will you open the door for me if you believe in chivalry
For I do not think you low though you bow to me so-so
I do not think you low though you bow to me so-so

Bridge:
I know you want to drink from the purest wine
But the drink is far more sour then you would ever think
He wants to be, he wants to be with everything under the sun
And she wants to burn, she wants to burn hot like that sun,
(whoa) hot like that sun

Chorus
Just like a legend that rises and then falls I cannot be his only one
And like a callous, cold, callous woman she'll never know what she did done

So like this legend that rises and then falls I'll never be his only one

i always thought that this song was about her being scared to be this guys "only one" he wants to be her everything, be her romeo and make everything perfect and although she likes him, she is just not ready for a commitment of that proportion. she still just wants to have fun and be young, shes fickle and doesn't want to be with just one guy no matter how perfect he may be it's a common theme in much of her earlier work.. think back to I'm like a bird.. she is aware that she doesn't want to be with one person.. she wants to be free and fly and find her soul

@peacelovendjo I think you are right.

I think the song is about how she isn't perfect...and doesn't want the perfect man either....but someone else...like her ex thinks that's hes still best for her...I just love how comfortable she is about being a heartbreaker...and being with the wrong guy...kinda like me....

hmmm, wow, i never thought of it that way before. i really like this song, i really like all the metaphors and imagery and stuff cuz im a nerd like that :p.

but i thought it was about how she loves someone but she doesn't want to because he wants "everything", like he wants to be powerful and have everything...and everyONE, and he is like, sort of seduced her before or something and is with her, but not really.

Like because he is kind of a player, or a "smooth-operator" or a "ladies man" kinda guy, or just realised that he was capable of that, or he is cheating on her or something.

And maybe he used to love her, and gave her his individed attention or something or he made her feel like it, but now he doesn't because he is on some power-trip now. But she still loves him, as she says "He makes me feel, like you used to".

Though she wishes that they could still be like only the two of them, like how she says, "will you open the door for me if you believe in chivalry", like if it's real what they have...like it seems like a metaphor like for closeness or something, like to "let her in."

Because still wants him to want her and only her, like to be like the "sun" in his world, or the "legend" or "star" or whatever, and "burn hot like that sun". and she hates that she isn't and she doesn't want to show it, like, how she sings, "And like a fickle flower when it first sees the light, I cannot show just how I fight". Even how she refers to herself in third person like it's not about her until like the end.

and so that whole thing, about the "legend who rises and then falls" seems to basically sum it up. Like she is like "legend" or the "star" in his world to begin with, but then she "falls" or is no longer his only interest.
