mechassassin1... i don't think it can be about 1984- although i can see the overall theme could be likened to it, the lyrics themselves make no reference nor allusion to anything. personally i think it's about people's lives being empty and them not being able to better themselves. the lines "in their milk flats with five kids too many" and "I am dreaming of a life / and it's not the life that's mine" make my point i think.. they make me sad too, lol. overall a fantastic song- one i don't think i'll ever tire of- and as proven, one that has a lot of meaning that everyone interprets differently. great tune, riffs too. what else do u want from a song? :P

'to the scraping of flatware and china and saran wrap to stifle libido' this is my favourite line in the song. To mean it says, I am so sick of being stuck in a committed relationship without any hot sex! It screams of wanting to get out of the situation.
the best line i've ever heard: "and the robots in their riot gear glimmer in my rearview mirror." just beautiful. to me this song is talking about the disease of depression and society making it difficult to accomplish your dreams.
I always think of how modern day society labels us and tells us how much shit is wrong with us, in the olden days people didn't have 50 different diseases and disorders and problems to worry about, they came in the package of life. I don't know, that doesn't make sense, but that's me.
does anyone wanna take a shot at what the black, rewarding book is? I guess the most obvious answer would be the bible, but that really doesnt seem to sit well with the rest of the song.
