The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
Oh I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
Do you know that I hung my
Oh my head and I cried

Oh you are my sunshine, my only sunshine
Girl, you make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never never never know, how much I love you
But don't you to take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, that you really loved me
And no one else could ever come between
But not you've left me and you love another
And you have shattered all my dreams

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never never never know dear, how much I love you
But don't you to take

If you love me
If you need me
If you want me

I don't want you to take
I don't want you to take
My sunshine away

General CommentI've heard soooo many covers. The best recent one I've heard is by The Civil Wars. You'd have to youtube it...but wow. Filled with such longing. And it being a duet by a man/woman (Joy & John Paul)makes it fresher...I think it is ripe for revival..and they would be just the ones to do it.

General CommentWell, Ray Charles pulls his classic performance trick on this one, splitting the verses between himself and one of the Raelettes' girls to create a pretty vivid argument between the two.
This really changes the song, from a slow development of the idea that the lovers have separated, to a very fast, upbeat version, which makes the whole thing a lot more dramatic, but actually detracts from the sense of sadness and despair present in the original.

I love the way Ray sings the first verse and chorus, but after that I can't help but think of this version as a bit of a marketing ploy.

Still, it rocks along pretty easily.
