I'm a fortunate son, of a fortunate son,
Livinglarge on the wrong side of town
Too many friends and the fun never ends
Drinkin' and hangin' around
I wanna' own the world, I wanna' swallow it whole

At least I could kick it all down
I wanna' kick it all down

Eyes wide open, I can't see
Eyes wide open, what you mean
Eyes wide open, I can't seem to be

I don't take the bus, and I never walked too far
The furthest I got was my own backyard
A fist full of cash that somebody else earned
They sent me some more when it all got burned
I wanna' take control, I wanna' make it all mine

At least I could kick it all down
I wanna' kick it all down

Eyes wide open, I can't see
Eyes wide open, what you mean
Eyes wide open, I can't seem to be

I'll get what I want as I make up my mind
I'm turnin' you inside out
I wanna' own the world, I wanna' swallow it whole

I think I can kick it all down
I wanna' kick it all down

Eyes wide open, I can't see
Eyes wide open, what you mean
Eyes wide open, I can't seem to be

This song is about how when we act like we're on top of the world, we're really just insanely confused and don't know where the hell we're going.

I think it's about some rich kid (a fortunate son of a fortunate son) Who is too lazy to do anything productive and gets everything handed to him (I don't take the bus and I never walked too far, The furthest I got was my own backyard. A fist full of cash that somebody else earned, They sent me some more when it all got burned.) And because of this even though he is happy in terms of material things and has the ability to be or do whatever he wants he can't understand the beauty of the world or what life is all about.(Eyes wide open I can't see. Eyes wide open what you mean. Eyes wide open I can't seem to be

i agree with you froggy this song is about a rich kid, who johnny protraits as being a lazy sponge, who never worked a day in his/her life and always gets what he/she wants. And cant actually see that u cannot buy friends and the world is about more than material objects.

Goo goo dolls songs are often metaphors, although it maybe about the rich kid. To me its about the "club 18" gernation. That may be a bit of a european term. It's this generations 18-25's. Many are lost in a pool of alcohol, drugs and empty sex. Many don't work, or if they do they dont have good jobs, simply because of messing around at school. Drains on society, perhaps. Again this is just my interpretation.

I agree the songs about a rich kid, who doesnt work and everything is just handed to him. but i think that hes realises this and wants to make something of himself and get away from the life he lives. "I wanna' take control, I wanna' make it all mine. At least I could kick it all down."

as we wallow in our self pity we never hear those around us, we are blinded and deafened by our own egos... i love this song

i think this song is about a fortunately-rich kid who only knows how to drink and party (like paris hilton.). i think Goo Goo Dolls is pointing out the irony of being born rich.

I didn't really think of it this way but after listening to it and reading these comments I do also think it's about a rich kid who even though he has all the things he'd ever need, he's not happy. When I hear this song though I'm reminded of that feeling you get when you've got no direction and just not sure what to do with your life. You know you need to make a change but you just don't know how.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
