Tootie Lyrics

You put a rose in my hand
Put a dollar in my pocket
But you don’t understand
How the days grow longer, the sky is black as night
I see the morning but you won’t see the light

I thought about you for a long, long time
I wrote about you but my words don’t seem to rhyme
And now you’re lying here
But my heart still beats for you

Had a dream about you
You sat right down beside me
And you told me we were through
It was all so real and you told me reasons why
You brought me to the window
And you taught me how to fly

I thought about you for a long, long time
I said I love you but we just don’t have the time
And now you’re lying here
But my heart still beats for you

I thought to hold you for a long, long time
You said I love you but my heart won’t seem to chime in
And now you’re lying here
And my heart still beats for you...I’m trying, and my heart still beats for you

To me, this song is about a man who broke up with his lover. The dream he talks about where she sat down and said that they were through with each other wasn't a dream, but to the man it feels like a bad nightmare. They each seem to still have love for the other, but they don't feel like they can repair the problems in their relationship ("we just don't have the time"). The song is him trying to tell her that he still loves her, even though she may not understand how or why. This is one of my favorite songs now. I heard it the day after I broke up with my girlfriend, and I cried because it was exactly how I felt.

I’ve always thought this is a bereaved lover, standing at his love’s graveside. Her funeral saw him with a rose in his hand, her money in his pocket, but while he sees the morning light, she never will again. He’s struggling to come to terms with her loss and can’t let her go…
