Rock Lobster Lyrics
We were at a party
His ear lobe fell in the deep
Someone reached in and grabbed it
It was a rock lobster
We were at the beach
Everybody had matching towels
Somebody went under a dock
And there they saw a rock
It wasn't a rock
It was a rock lobster
Motion in the ocean
His air hose broke
Lots of trouble
Lots of bubble
He was in a jam
S'in a giant clam
Down, down
Underneath the waves
Mermaids wavin'
Wavin' to mermen
Wavin' sea fans
Sea horses sailin'
Dolphins wailin'
Red snappers snappin'
Clam shells clappin'
Muscles flexin'
Flippers flippin'
Down, down
Let's rock!
Boys in bikinis
Girls on surfboards
Everybody's rockin'
Everybody's fruggin'
Twistin' 'round the fire
Havin' fun
Bakin' potatoes
Bakin' in the sun
Put on your noseguard
Put on the lifeguard
Pass the tanning butter
Here comes a stingray
There goes a manta-ray
In walked a jelly fish
There goes a dogfish
Chased by a catfish
In flew a sea robin
Watch out for that piranha
There goes a narwhale
HERE COMES A BIKINI WHALE!
His ear lobe fell in the deep
Someone reached in and grabbed it
It was a rock lobster
Everybody had matching towels
Somebody went under a dock
And there they saw a rock

It's about a beach party. The beach teens are partying at the top of their powers. I mean, all-out Par-TAY -- and they're having such a blast that they imagine all the sea life is partying too.
MOTION IN THE OCEAN HIS AIR HOSE BROKE LOTS OF TROUBLE LOTS OF BUBBLE HE WAS IN A JAM HE'S IN A GIANT CLAM Could be a sexual reference (Guy and girl are doing the lover's mambo. Our Hero's protective device breaks, and his newly uncovered "trouser shark" is in the lady's secret portal)
PUT ON THE LIFEGUARD Drag the lifeguard's body on top of youra and make out with him
MUSCLES FLEXING Not the blue-black shellfish, but muscles as in bodybuilders striding around the seaside to the admiration of all the little femininas
BIKINI WHALE Could be a derogatory reference to a physically abundant woman in a scanty swimsuit
and, somehow it seems significant Schneider would sing "tanning butter" instead of the more-common phrase "suntan lotion"

actually, tanning butter is a little different from suntan lotion. Tanning butter is a suntanning aid that comes in the form of a stiff, waxy paste

i heart this song. i knew it before i heard it. hehe. we were meant for each other. [its reminds me of the rocky horror picture show]
this song is so rad. the shrills of the gal singers, weird-ass vocalision of fred schneider, and crazy surf guitar make this song extremely whack but equally amusing to listen to. no idea what it means, but it does sound like an "all out party of sea creatures" like stoolhardy said.
Not sure what the WHOLE song means (a wild beach party perhaps) but I am ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that the "motion in the ocean" verse is a very graphic description of a guy whose rubber accidently bursts while he is having sex.
This song was one of three that could get everyone onto the dance floor every time when I was in college. The other two were "Whip It" (Devo) and "Turning Japanese" (The Vapors). As you can see, I was in college a long, long time ago!
Love all three of those songs!!
Love all three of those songs!!
the people in my dorm had VERY diverse musical tastes. but the two records everyone enjoyed were the B-52's first LP, and Speaking in Tongues by Talking Heads.

My friends from another dorm got annoyed with me for playing Joy Division (and VU's White Light White Heat) all the time. But the three of us were crazy about Brian Eno: especially Before and After Science, and Another Green World.

This song is enlightening. No one in the entire universe is unable to enjoy its sweetness factor. Go lobsters!

Best song by the B-52s, which is saying a hell of a lot.
This song is brilliant. Lobsters are the best.
