No Rain Lyrics
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view but it's not sane
It's not sane
I just want someone to say to me, oh,
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made
And I don't understand why sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake,
And it rips my life away but it's a great escape
Escape, escape, escape
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain,
Ya don't like my point of view,
Ya think that I'm insane
It's not sane, it's not sane
I just want someone to say to me, oh, oh, oh
I'll always be there when you wake, yeah
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
I really wanna really gonna have it made
Oh oh oh

My absolute favorite song. It's about depression, most definately. Finding beauty in simple things (watching puddles gather rain), dreaming of love (pour some tea for two; i just want someone to say to me, I'll always be there when you wake, ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today, so stay with me and I'll have it made ), staying true to yourself (speak my point of view but it's not sane), and overall hoping that someone will come along and love you for who you are.
Is “No Rain” about a depressed person? It may be. It’s known to be about the lyricist’s ex, and though it appears to take her point of view, it hardly comes across as sympathetic.

“All I can say” I’m starting out on the defensive, or my range of conversation topics is extremely limited, or both.

“my life is pretty plain” Given that I do the insane things I’m about to describe, I should still be likeable because I’m ordinary. In other words, I assume that everyone’s insane and that I’m just one of the nuts, so I should fit right in.
“I like watchin’ the puddles gather rain” I get a lot out of my long crying spells.
“all I can do is just pour some tea for two and speak my point of view, but it’s not sane” I’m such a loser that no one wants to come hear me vent, I’m crazy enough to pretend otherwise, and that sums up how I spend my days.
“Ya know I’d like to keep my cheeks dry today, so stay with me and I’ll have it made” It’s not “we’ll have it made”. Let me use you, at least for today, to listen to my maunderings.
“I don’t understand why I sleep all day and I start to complain that there’s no rain” Why are my relationships so dismal that my best options are to either zone out or sit alone crying?
“…all I can do is read a book to stay awake, and it rips my life away, but it’s a great escape” I waste my life on fantasy, because doing anything with anyone real, including sex, is a drag.
“Ya don’t like my point of view” Well, who do I think I am, Rosanna Arquette? Going for a guy just because he’s a rock lyricist is the fast path to getting memorialized in sarcasm. The upbeat music drives home the point that he lacks the least care about the troubles – true or fictional – described in the lyrics. In the music video, at least, the misfit at last finds more of her own kind.

I feel this song is about lonliness and seeking acceptance. The first stanza mentions 'I like watching the puddles gather rain' suggests that he has nobody to spend his time with so with this extra free time he enjoys the little things such as watching rain. "pour some tea for two" is followed directly by by referring to himself as insane. This could mean that he is almost schizophrenic as in pouring tea for an extra non existant person then tells that person his opinions, for nobody else will listen. The beginning of the chorus is pretty basic, his desire for companionship and end his lonliness/sadness. The second part of the chorus explains how he doesnt understand why he sleeps all day, which entails how he is unaware of some of his actions. it then alludes to the rain in the first verse, because he enjoys watching the rain, and complains when theres no rain. The second verse gets interesting, he starts referring to a "you" as in "you dont like my point of view". This suggests that as opposed to just lack of companionship, some of this lonliness is connected with loss of love. Earlier in the song it refers to a great escape. These could connect, as in he is escaping from his sadness from his loss. These observations aren't definite, they are merely spectulations. I base these upon the lyrics and the official music video. This is still my favorite song and blind melon rocks.
If you feel I'm inaccurate in my interpretation, please tell me your opinion.
well, I think that he was talking about his own insanity.

This song makes me so sad... The tune is so happy, but the words are melancholy. It feels pretty lonely, and we'll always remember Shannon, he taught me a few lessons... Keep watchin the puddles gather rain, man, Peace.

I like NO Rain ripped away version alot better on the Nico cd. Its alot more powerful and its not as melodiously candycoated like the orginal. Blind Melon is truly amazing but this however is not one of their best songs. they have others taht really blow my mind

I just love this song especially the line 'and all I can do is read a book to stay awake it rips my life away but its a great escape...escape...escape' because I love to read and for me it is an escape from the troubles in my life.

i really like this song, and have since i first heard it, when i was younger. now that i am a little bit older, i think my appreciation for the song is great. the lyrics definately go deeper than the happy melody of the song - and i think it is a good combination. the lyrics are quite sad, but classic and genius.

This is my favorite song.

im not sure if it has been mentioned but this song was actually written by christopher thorn the rhythm guitarist, not by shannon in fact it was written before they even knew eachother chris wrote it about his ex girlfriend that was a debbie downer that never wanted to go out and do stuff and she was always happy when it rained because she would use it as an excuse to sit at home and read books all day
whats wrong with reading books when it's raining?

I heard this song in my head this morning. I lost my beloved friend, and baby, my 10 year old cat Hefner that I had adopted when he was a kitten. I lost him to cancer over the weekend about 5 days ago. He died in my arms as I cried so hard and told him we would meet again when the time is right and he has a new body, we will recognize each other. I have always believed and read alot on reincarnation of pets. I truly believe our furbabies come back to us because the bond is so strong. The words of this song are the cat singing the first lyrics (life is pretty plain, watching puddles gather rain) and the cat owner singing the second lyrics about reincarnation of pet (speak my point of view but it's not sane). I heard the song in my head and looked up this site and it makes sense to em in this way. Hefner died on a rainy day. And now the song clues me in that I will find him again on a rainy day...

This song does have sad lyrics, but what makes it great is the video! In the end, the little girl in the bumble bee costume finds a whole field of other "bees" to dance with and she's not alone anymore. This is my all time favorite song and always cheers me up when I'm feeling blue, not brings me down!
