This song is an 80s classic. I love it.
I think this song is hilarious. Some guy finds a girl's phone number written on the wall saying "For a good time call 867-5309" and is convinced that she's his soulmate. It's great.
I read that it was partly because of this song that movies and TV had to start using numbers that began with "555" instead of actual ones.
Too many areas had tons of people calling the actual number (their area code) 867-5309 and asking for "Jenny", which is really stupid but it was done.
Now, I believe that in order to use someone's real phone number on-screen, you must have their permission.
People assume that this is about a random number...I think he is either stalking her, or in love with her, or both - he truly loves her but is afraid to take that next step because of her beauty and resulting unattainability, so he has become 'disturbed' and it has transitioned to stalking.
I'm thinking this guy, let's call him "C", really is in love with Jenny..... so in love, he can't control himself. To quote him, he thought about coming out publicly, but "lost my nerve". But in the end, he's got her number, but afraid he'll loss her, so he says: "Jenny don't change your number"
He's also concerned he's "like the others before"..... but we all know, that's not true. ha.
Disturbed means interrupted. "I tried my imagination but I was disturbed means" means "got caught holding onto the thing you give me that I can hold onto" if you know what I mean and I think you do.
I think this song it about him seeing Jenny's number on the wall--wherever it is--and thinking that maybe she's the one for him. That he can save her. The others called her to "have a good time"... He doesn't want that; he wants love. He wants to save her.
But Jenny might not even exist; it could be a prank by some other guy making it up or posting it in a bathroom stall. Or maybe it was put there in revenge--one of those "others before."
So many possibilities. ^_^
