Blue Light Lyrics
There's a blue light in his eyes
There's a blue light, yeah
I want to see it shine
There's a ship that sails on by
There's a world under it
I think I see it sailing away
Miles crashing me by
Crashing me by
Crashing me by
Flames over everyone's heart
Don't you see them shining?
I want to hear them beating for me
Waves crashing me by
Crashing me by
Crashing me by
a lot of mazzy's songs have a transcendental theme to them. I think she expresses, in a very simplistic and beautiful way, how everyday experiences can be surreal and powerful ones. it's as if she's an observer and all these things are happening around her in slow motion, and she's only watching, but never taking an active role. Like when we feel everything around us is moving and we are just standing still in the middle of a chaotic system, watching in amazement.
@alovelyfadeout FYI Mazzy Star is the band's name. Her name is Hope Sandoval.

This is a beautifully mysterious song, but for me the basic take-away is a feeling of yearning and connection to all of humanity and to the world we live in. The blue light in the best friend's room could just be the glow of a TV, reflected in his eyes - though as the pulsating glow of the song itself, it also represents the power of the universe running through us. The singer is sharing her sensation - one many of us often feel - of being disembodied, sailing, floating, seeing the world as pure energy. This isn't cold - rather, she's filled with a kind of serene joy and is trying to share the experience with us: "Don't you see them shining." The song is a beautiful, open-ended expression of an almost spiritual love for a blue-lit world and the flaming hearts swimming within it.
When I lived near the ocean, I would stare out at the sea at night. Every night, several ships would sail past and each of them had a blue light. They capture your attention given that the sea water is so dark.
god i wish i could sing like her
this song is beautiful, like all of their music.
.....its.....ah i love this song i just cant explain it
interpretations would help me alot on some of these mazzy star songs. i know its about what it means to you but sometimes i could us a little push to get a meaning of it. someone? please?
@Adscititious The blue light is moonlight, the moon is the ship sailing past the window. Now, the original blue light in the eye could have been made more blue by a tv being on in the room, and so we have two windows, one in the bedroom wall, and the other window is a window to the world via a tv screen. But the moon is miles away, so the song solidified around the moon. Also, during this time, we have the popular tv show Sailor Moon, which may or may not have influenced the song writing,...

Now, the original blue light in the eye could have been made more blue by a tv being on in the room, and so we have two windows, one in the bedroom wall, and the other window is a window to the world via a tv screen. But the moon is miles away, so the song solidified around the moon. Also, during this time, we have the popular tv show Sailor Moon, which may or may not have influenced the song writing, probably not, though. Now, the moon is a soft light, but in the day, the sun comes out, and is a flame that makes people hot. Stars and celestial events and objects are a running theme in this band. Mazzy Star is like its own entity, in a good way, Mazzy being a term meaning special, precious, jewel like, a pearl. This can apply to the moon, oddly enough, but also any star, and even the sun. In fact, a lot of their songs tend to make you think the sun is being worshipped. Luciferianism, the belief that a light bearer came and fell and suffered to bring us life and enlightenment, is a common belief system preached to artists of all kinds, and the rebellion and preachiness of it is highly appealing to rebellious artists. I do not suspect that Mazzy Star particularly fell into that, nor that their star really fits the lucifer mold. In fact, the devil in their songs tends to symbolize abusive parents. The last lines, I want them to beat to me, might be a misheard lyric, but it might be beat, if so, there are two ways people beat to someone, it is a phrase, they were beating their way through the crowd to see me, and beat to me, keep time to the music\'s beat. I think in this case, it meant for people to beat toward them, in a loving way, like hearts beating for someone, feeling sorry for them and loving them, or just loving them, in a platonic way. When you\'ve been hurt, especially by authority figures, that you were supposed to be able to trust, it leaves a void in your life, and you feel more intensely the love from other people because of it. I am a poet, so I hope she does not mind me explaining this. Much love to you and her.
me and my best friend would go to the train tracks and play our guitars, drink and smoke our brands. THIS song is one we always hafta sing... nomatter what. we'd be there for hours at a time.
i think its the morbid-bluesy emotions that flow not only tru the chord progressions, but also from her delivery of the lyrics. you almost feel the same way when those DRINKS are being tossed down. its hard not to get emotional cuz its almost forced.
when an arrangement can do that to grown men then that song has power and it is truely meaningful.
Mazzy Star sings the BLUES...and this track is one of their best, next to Fade Into You.
David Lynch likes to say that blue is often thought of as a color representing change. What I take away from this song is that maybe Hope was sitting with a friend in his room, and she had felt something for him she'd never felt before, but based on the passing ships and crashing waves and all that, It's a short lived spark of a feeling, and nothing really comes of it.
This one is difficult but I want to point out a couple of associations and maybe someone else gets an idea to help along the way. In this old fairy tale

blue light is an object that grants you your wishes, connects a wounded person dying alone, to life, the world and love of another person.
For some reason Louis Aragon's poem Elsa's Eyes also comes to my mind, with its blue eyes and ocean and the blue colour that is associated with Virgin Mary.
Personally this song reminds me of a girl I once knew who shot herself. She was trying to cope with her problems with drugs and alcohol, and the blue light in railway stations often brings this song and her to my mind.
