We All Stand Lyrics

Three miles to go
Three miles to go
At the end of the road
There's a soldier waiting for me

I've got three miles to go
Three miles to go
At the end of the road
There's a soldier waiting for me

At the end of the road
At the end of the road
At the end of the road

Life goes on and on in this real life fantasy
Forever to be still
Breath held tight inside of me
Life goes on and on in this real life fantasy
Forever to be still
Breath held tight inside of me
Life goes on and on...

It's a red sky tonight
It's a red sky tonight
At the end of the road
Where all futures go
At the end of the road
There's a soldier waiting for me
He's got three miles to go
Three miles to go
At the end of the road
At the end of the road
There's blood on shore

Life goes on and on in this real life fantasy
Forever to be still
Breath held tight inside of me
Life goes on and on in this real life fantasy
Forever to be still
Breath held tight inside of me

with a line like "Life goes on and on in this real life fantasy" how can you people not love this song

I don't know if New Order intended some figurative meaning by the soldier but maybe this song is very literal. The first person is a soldier in the back of a troop carrier with 3 miles to go to the front line. At the front line is an unknown enemy soldier with, in a sense, the same 3 miles to go before confrontation and one will shoot the other.

Perhaps it's a comment about war, about sending soldiers out from both sides to meet at some pre-ordained place to try to shoot each other.

My Interpretation

I always interpreted this one as being about a man walking out to face a firing squad. "We all stand" are the men all standing in a line where a "soldier is waiting for me" to shoot them.
