Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ty for the nice compliment, coldirons! Dylan was certainly enigmatic but as a true folkie he was always steeped in the language of Christianity, right from his first album or before. But the few albums before his conversion, you can see it gradually coming more and more into focus. This song is probably the most conclusive example of it.
Personally i think that the song is about loss, the verse about "Renegade priests and treacherous young witches<br /> Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you." i beleive that he is discussing people discounting the gifts, aspecially the giftof love that he had given to a woman he no longer posesses. The scar and heart shaped tattoo are in refrence to the idea of a broken heart and loss.<br /> <br /> Also i beleive the verse about "I don't need your organization" definately doesn't suggest to me that Dylan was happy to be engulfed into the folds of an organized religion. <br /> <br /> Also most biblical refrences to Jesus do not suggest he had blond hair, in this case who is the blonde haired lover in the seventh verse?<br /> <br /> Contrastly a lot of the imagery in the lyrics suggest a willingness for christianity. was the song perhaps written at a time when Dylan was either considering the decision for a conversion or regretting it.<br /> <br /> A lot of symbolic songs contain religious/christian symbolism, which does not always have anything to do with an approaching conversion. in fact it is just as likely to be mocking as awed.<br />
