Two Thousand Years Lyrics

In the beginning
There was the cold and the night
Prophets and angels gave us the fire and the light
Man was triumphant
Armed with the faith and the will
That even the darkest ages couldn't kill

Too many kingdoms
Too many flags on the field
So many battles, so many wounds to be healed
Time is relentless
Only true love perseveres
It's been a long time and now I'm with you
After two thousand years

This is our moment
Here at the crossroads of time
We hope our children carry our dreams down the line
They are the vintage
What kind of life will they live?
Is this a curse or a blessing that we give?

Sometimes I wonder
Why are we so blind to fate?
Without compassion, there can be no end to hate
No end to sorrow
Caused by the same endless fears
Why can't we learn from all we've been through
After two thousand years?

There will be miracles
After the last war is won
Science and poetry rule in the new world to come
Prophets and angels
Gave us the power to see
What an amazing future there will be
And in the evening
After the fire and the light
One thing is certain: nothing can hold back the night
Time is relentless
And as the past disappears
We're on the verge of all things new
We are two thousand years

Humanity has acquired much knowledge over the years, but, even so, we haven't changed at the core.

this song is so well written and the rhythm is so good that it almost brings a tear to my eyes.

My Opinion

I think that what this song is trieing to point out is that after 2,000 years, this world is still fighting with eachother, no one gets along, and most of us don't even realize it.

I agree...And it seems a lot more meaningful now.

To musicchick44,

I think it is interesting you decided to discuss this tune now. Perhaps our aspiring to the higher emotions of compassion and equanimity are implied here.

From the lyric "It's been a long time and now I'm with you, after two thousand years" I concluded that it's about a guy who's love for a girl is so epic that he feels the entirety of human civilization has been building up to it.

@Scribbler17 I always heard him talking to God. Maybe end of life, or a religious experience.

I think it's a little of what Scribbler is saying, and a lil of what the rest of you are saying.

We're still fighting and we're still the same broken little creatures what smashed rocks together until we discovered fire, then consequently went to war over said fire. But at the same time love kinda trumps all other desires and emotions. Nothing can change a persons motives faster than falling in love. So despite the fact that YES we're still fighting wars and oppressing people we don't like and lead less than perfect lives, there comes a moment that is so perfect, a moment in time set aside for each of us when we find that someone and makes everything else seem insignificant, so much so that yes "the entirety of human civilization has been building up to it." Sometimes we have to wait for it, but in the end it's out there waiting for us.

AWESOME ! LISTEN !!

    • Not only did he write this epic song, but you can also hear the great compassion he puts into it !!! 'It's about Soul' . . . Why are we so afraid of each other !? Why don't we help each other, care for each other, share with each other ? THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS WE WANT - AND SO VERY FEW THINGS WE NEED (really!) God Help Us !

I love Joel. He has had such a long, successful career. And if you've ever had the honor of hearing him on the piano (a solo) close up and personal, you will understand why he is deserving of respect.

I think the song is about a man who, at this moment, truly believes he'll be there and have courage, but it's the not way it will be. For when the sun rises in the sky, the temperatures warm the body, and spectacular beauty hits the streets and the beaches, everything he believes now he will not embrace then. It's just the way that it is and always will be.

And now someone up all night needs some good poetry and then a short nap with some big, furry friends. How boring that sounds, but what a rare luxury it really is...
