Im pretty sure this song is about heroin.

this IS a song about heroin, the line "craving for the good life" means craving for the drug "cause the fix begins to twist my troubled mind" means the high makes him feel better. the line "But its the feeling that i get when your away, twist my mind, cause im all alone and cold i feel like dying" means when he doesnt have the drug he feels sick n he feels its his only friend.just my 2 cents

he also mentions his mind 'running to the spoon,' which is used to cook heroin, and i think he's admitting that he has a problem because he keeps 'slippin that i slap me' back into it

It's sort of sad when you realize what it's about but it's still a good song. One of my faves. But what does the 'slippin that i slap me' mean?

This song is pretty cool. It's amazing to me that after STP started to get all weird and poppy, their music was still great! This song definitely makes drug references, with the spoon thing and all, but I think the good life Scott mentions is about being sober and staying off drugs. The impression I got was that Scott was talking about his wife, Mary, and how she helps him in life and keeps his mind off drugs for the most part.

I really don't think this song is about Mary at all...i think it's all about the drugs, how it's gripped him and he can't really let go. And when he mentions the good life, i agree he is refering to the life he wants and what he thinks about to stop him from taking the drugs, 'it's the craving for the good life That sees me through troubled times When the mind begins to wander to the spoon'

When I first heard this song I thought it was about a woman (I was nine when I got the album for Christmas). But I now see it's about heroin addiction. Artists always make songs about drugs to warn us not to use them. (artists of 1990 through today anyway) They do make you feel good but they ruin your life at the same time. This is my fav song on No.4

This song has an amazing dichotomy, the first verse is about Mary, it's the spoon that is the troubled times, it's the fix that twists his mind, the first verse of the song is about how he's got something better, her. She paints over the sorrow that otherwise makes his days grey, and roses (something beautiful) on death (something ugly).

Then the second verse is the heroin, when he doesn't have it he goes through withdrawl ( cold, feel like dyin) And only heroin can fill the craving that he gets from this. Then when he shoots ,up he wants to cry either because it feels so good, or because he knows he's killin himself. Then the heroin paints sorrow onto his day, and if he dies while on heroin, it'll all be roses to him.
