Maybe they should put songwriter details on because Eddie didn't write this song, it's a cover of a 1986 song by Hunters and Collectors, an Australian band. I recommend the original personally.
I love on the 'Gardens' DVD when he sings this with Mark Seymour - who wrote it. First time I heard it I nearly cried. Mark's got an amazing voice too and when he sings his bit you can see the admiration in Eds face as he looks up at him.
I like to think of this song as a relationship song. I dont want to think of it as a once night stand but as a romantic night where these 2 people wont see eachother for a day or so. I dont know I am more of a relationship guy.. haha
What a song is about and what it means is not always the same. This song is about a one night stand or a romantic relationship. But I think the deeper meaning is that life is short and that you shouldn't take life for granted, you never know what happens tomorrow.
In a version I heard on All That's Sacred #56, Eddie's brother attended the concert and Eddie dedicated this song to him and said: "cause life is short. it's beautiful, but it's short or something".
Eddie even makes a one night stand seem somehow romantic or if not romantic but he just has a way with words

I totally think this song is great! Though Hunters & Collectors' version i nice, I think Eddie has done wonders with it. Making his little twists here and there like the lyrics above. This is his version. I prefer it his way, his voice talks alone. Always!!

yeah it sounds like a one night stand to me but i didn't write it. it just makes me feel all the feelings i've had during those occasions.
good song, mark seymour doesn't seem to get as much credit for writing the song as eddie!. he tried to make up for it though by drowning out vedder when playing together in concert.
