Good ol fashioned love song, about needing somebody when you're down and out, or having someone stick by you through the hard times.
Its hard to tell because of the songs fade out, but I'm pretty sure that last line is just "Lord knows I'm tellin you." What you have here "Lord knows I pity you" makes NO sense in the context of the rest of the song.
