I've Had Enough Lyrics

You were under the impression
That when you were walking forwards
You'd end up further onward,
But things ain't quite that simple

You got altered information,
You were told to not take chances.
You missed out on new dances.
Now you're losing all your dimples"

My jacket's gonna be cut and slim and checked
Maybe a touch of seersucker with an open neck.
I ride a GS scooter with my hair cut neat
I wear my war time coat in the wind and sleet.

Love reign o'er me.
Love reign o'er me.
Love.

Had enough of living,
Had enough of dying,
Had enough of smiling,
Had enough of crying,
Taken all the high roads,
I've squandered and I've saved,
I've had enough of childhood,
I've had enough of grades.

I've had enough of living,
I've had enough of dying,
I've had enough of smiling,
I've had enough of crying,
I've taken all the high roads,
I've squandered and I've saved,
I've had enough of childhood,
I've had enough of grades.

"Get a job and fight to keep it.
Strike out to reach a mountain.
Be so nice on the outside,
But inside keep ambition.

Don't cry because you hunt them.
Hurt them first they'll love you.
There's a millionaire above you
And you're under his suspicion."

My jacket's gonna be cut and slim and checked
Maybe a touch of seersucker with an open neck.
I ride a GS scooter with my hair cut neat
I wear my war time coat in the wind and sleet.

Love reign o'er me.
Love reign o'er me.
Love.

I've had enough of dancehalls,
I've had enough of pills,
I've had enough of streetfights,
I've seen my share of kills,
I'm finished with the fashions,
And acting like I'm tough,
I'm bored with hate and passion,
I've had enough of trying to love.

"Hurt them first they'll love you." Who's the moron who wrote the lyrics? Please tell me the band borrowed some part-time, out-of-field writing team for these.

On the 1997 tour, the first verse was sung by PJ Proby who played the Godfather, the second by Roger, the third by Billy Idol who played the Ace Face, and the fourth (Love reign o'er me) by Roger again. I think these verses are an argument between Jimmy's personalities which ends in a contemplation of suicide. This is where Jimmy takes his first positive step: he decides to go back to Brighton and the sea which is a metaphor for a kind of spiritual unity.

I really like this interpretation, and I think it makes sense. There's so much going on here, it's contradictory to a large extent. Compare "I'm finished with the fashions and acting like I'm tough" to "My jacket's gonna be cut and slim and checked, Maybe a touch of seersucker, with an open neck. I ride a G.S. scooter with my hair cut neat, Wear my wartime coat in the wind and sleet." it's really a contradiction, it's like Jimmy can't tell which voice to listen to, so to speak. Jimmy's passive side I especially see contradictory attitudes between this, and...

@Regos the Sane saw the 97 tour as well in MSG! Memories! Great show! ✌️

Note that Pete Townshend said "Mod is a shorter word for 'young beautiful and stupid.'"
