I've Got No Strings (Pinocchio) Lyrics
To hold me down
To make me fret, or make me frown
I had strings
But now I'm free
There are no strings on me
That's the only way to go
I want the world to know
Nothing ever worries me
Hi-ho the me-ri-o
I'm as happy as can be
I want the world to know
Nothing ever worries me
So I have fun
I'm not tied up to anyone
They've got strings
But you can see
There are no strings on me
You have no strings
Your arms is free
To love me by the Zuider Zee
Ya, ya, ya
If you would woo
I'd bust my strings for you
You've got no strings
Comme ci comme ca
Your savoire-faire is ooh la la!
I've got strings
But entre nous
I'd cut my strings for you
Down where the Volga flows
There's a Russian rendezvous
Where me and Ivan go
But I'd rather go with you, hey!
I think this is a very lonely song. In the context of the movie Age of Ultron in which verses 1 and 3 are used, I believe the word "strings" has a dual meaning: a puppeteer's strings (something used to manipulate someone), and connections to other people such as love or friendship. Therefore, when the song says "I've got no strings" and "I'm not tied up to anyone", it means that this person believes they can't be manipulated with threats towards the people they care about because they don't care about anyone. Concerning the other verses, I think, because of the manically happy tone of the song and how it seems to make less and less sense towards the end, that this person is delusional/ paranoid about having "strings", likely due to past trauma of being used. In verses 4-6, the song refers to an unspecified "you". Perhaps this means the person does actually care for someone and is so paranoid of them being used by someone else as a way to manipulate them that they insist that they have no connections/ feelings towards anyone.
Whoops that was long! Anyways these are just my thoughts. Scawt's interpretation down below seems a little extreme to me and doesn't seem to merit serious consideration, although the tone of it fits with my theory that the narrator is delusional.
That's it! Be free of your strings! The capitalist system has got you all tied the fuck down with nowhere to go! Well, fuck oppression! Fuck America! Cut yourself free of these fucking strings. Don't let them tell you that there's not more to your life than pissing your last climbing the corporate ladder from 9 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock at night, only to come home to TV dinners and reruns of Seinfeld! Stand up for yourself! Cut those fucking strings and experience true freedom!!
