I think this one is fairly clear "battery brides" as in "battery hens". An unkind reference to the young women of his town; all the same and lacking in imagination.
The live version of this song is very impressive and quite a bold choice as it's not an obvious crowd-pleaser.
Perhaps this is about Andy wanting to marry an Energizer or Duracell bride.
The parentheses part of the title refers to how briefly Brian Eno considered joining XTC. Ah.. one of the great "What ifs.." of the music world, eh?
