When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
Why's it feel so good? (When it hurts so bad)
(When it hurts so bad)

When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
Why's it feel so good? (When it hurts so bad)
(When it hurts so bad)

I loved real, real hard once
But the love wasn't returned
Found out the man I'd die for
He wasn't even concerned
I tried, and I tried, and I tried
To keep him in my life (to keep him in my life)
I cried, and I cried, and I cried
But I couldn't make it right

But I, I loved the young man
And if you ever been in love
Then you'd understand

That what you want might make you cry (want might make you cry)
What you need might pass you by (need might pass you by)
If you don't catch it (if you don't catch it)
(If you don't catch it)
And what you need ironically (need ironically)
Will turn out what you want to be (what you want to be)
If you just let it (if you just let it)
If you just let it (if you just let it)

See, I thought this feeling
It was all that I had
But how could this be love
And make me feel so bad? (Gave up my power)
Gave up my power
I existed for you
But whoever knew
The voo-doo you'd do, yeah, yeah

But I, I loved the young man
And if you ever been in love
Then you'll understand

That what you want might make you cry
What you need might pass you by
If you don't catch it (if you don't, you don't)
(If you don't, if you don't)
And what you need ironically
Will turn out what you want to be
If you just let it (if you don't, if you don't)
(If you don't, if you don't)
See, what you want might make you cry (if you don't, if you don't)
What you need might pass you by (if you don't, if you don't)
If you don't catch it (if you don't, if you don't)
(If you don't, if you don't)
What you need ironically (if you don't, if you don't)
Will turn out what you want to be (if you don't, if you don't)
If you just let it
If you just let it

When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
Why's it feel so good? (When it hurts so bad)
(When it hurts so bad)

When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
Why's it feel so good? (When it hurts so bad)
(When it hurts so bad)

When it hurts so bad (when it hurts so bad)
So bad (when it hurts so bad)
(Why's it feel so good?) When it hurts so bad
(Why's it feel so good?) When it hurts so bad
(Why's it feel so good?)
(Why's it feel so good?)

You ain't said nothin', man
Come on, you gotta say somethin' to me, man
Really, like, love right now is just like confusion
Like people be thinking they love somebody
And don't really love somebody, like
I thought I was in love with this girl and I really wasn't
It's like now, I don't really care about her no more
(He used her, now he's like)
Oh, ok, alright
You think that TV and music and all that (yeah)
Have somethin' to do with
Why people are confused about love? (Yes)
Why? (yeah)
'Cause today we listen to a lot of TV and a lot of music
And then, and what sounds nice may not always be right for you
Yeah, we need to put you on a bullhorn
Let you ride around Newark and say that

This song is so cryptic to me!

Lauryn is saying two things to me here. Shit went awry in her relationship, but that doesn't mean its hopeless.... she really wanted to work it out, but she couldn't. But she's also saying that it's notalways hopeless, and that one shouldkeep trying until it's really over.
I think this song can be taken two ways. In my mind it really means that the girl should do what she needs and wants... either that means leaving him (ironically the next song on the album is "I Used To Love Him") or she should try and work it out somehow. it says he used to be unconcerned and he neglected her. But it says nothing about there not being hope.. The whole song is based on how she still loved him, and if she does, then mabe there's something left to salvage... why's it feel so good, then? There's no finality in this song. It could end either way. If love is involved, then keep trying, I say.

Oh my god, she captures unrequited love perfectly here. She loves this guy, it isn't returned; he's probably playing her around and it hurts, but she's in love so she puts up with it - 'if you've ever been in love then you'd understand'.

I think this song is about how to find home in your own soul and have control above your feelings before your feelings have control above you.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
